A Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy sword, dagger scabbard, or chape probably dating to c AD 1500-1700.  The object comprises a single sheet of copper alloy which is now damaged and bent but originally was folded to create a flattened tube which narrowed to the terminal and the scabbard was triangular in plan.  The copper alloy has been folded to create an oval shape with the metal meeting at the back to create a seam (although it does not appear to have been soldered to seal the seam).  At the narrow terminal, the shaft …

An incomplete medieval copper alloy chape, probably from a knife sheath, perhaps dating to c AD 1100-1300. Woods' (2021) Type VIIci chape. It is a basal plate, folded in half to create a trapezoidal shape on both sides, one face with upward parallel horizontal incisions or ridges within a slightly raised border, the other with a single roughly etched simple cross. A single plano-convex cross section extension arm rises obliquely from one end of one face, the other three missing to old breaks. The remnant of a rivet hole can be seen at the top of the arm.  …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape of medieval date, comprising a sheet of metal with a transverse fold at the lower margin, creating trapezoidal plates on either side of the scabbard, only one of which remains. This plate has incised herringbone decoration on the front and stumps from two long projecting arms from the upper corners. These arms would have terminated in lobes with rivet holes. A silver and gold mount of Early Medieval date (550-650 AD), probably from a sword scabbard. The mount is pyramidal in shape, and is hollow with a square, slightly recessed apex and trapezoidal-shaped sides. The base is square in plan, and an integral rectangular bar runs transversely across it. Set within the recess of the apex is waffle patterned gold foil. The recess is now empty aside from this decoration, but it is likely that it once held a gemstone or glass setting, with traces of a white paste still visible around the edges. The sides exhibit chip-carved decoration, with each f…

A fragment from a medieval copper-alloy openwork sheath chape, dating to c. AD 1075-1175. It is sub rectangular in plan. The plate would have had a counterpart to which it was joined at a fold at the left-hand side when viewed with the largely straight edge to the right. This other plate, which would have had different openwork decoration, has been lost, as has the arm which would have extended from the counterpart fold of the plate side for attachment. The two plates would have been attached to each other by rivets retained in the hole towards the right-hand corner, and in a (missi…

A fragment of an openwork copper-alloy medieval scabbard chape dating from the 11th to 12th century. The chape is trapezoidal in cross-section with two original edges surviving, the two remaining edges being breaks in the plate. It is mostly flat in cross-section with a plain reverse, although the moulded decoration creates an undulating front. At the corner where the two original edges meet is a broadly triangular rebate featuring a circular drilled hole (c. 2.5 mm diameter) that would have been used to rivet the chape to a sheath. No trace of the rivet survives. The moulded de…

A Medieval copper alloy dagger chape, dating to AD 1450-1600. The chape is made of copper alloy sheet, folded to form a sub-triangular chape with a truncated point. The join of the two ends of the plate is central on one face, and leaves a V-shaped opening at the mouth, there are two sewing holes flanking this opening. A slit at the temrinal probably allowed for the base to be folded shut evenly, but this has now been flattened.
