Incomplete Medieval-Post Medieval copper alloy scabbard chape, c.AD 1485-1600.
This is a damaged scabbard chape, made from a sheet of copper alloy folded into shape. The chape is decorated with a single quatrefoil opening on the obverse. The chape tapers in towards the base, and there is an overlapped vertical seam on the reverse. Both the upper and lower edge are missing due to corrosion and damage, probably sustained during deposition. This damage has destroyed any further decorations that may have existed.

A complete copper-alloy scabbard chape with traces of white metal coating. The object is composed of a triangle of sheet metal rolled into a long conical tube. A seam can be seen running the length of one side. The lower end is rounded. The upper socket end is decorated with at least two incised grooves encircling it. Traces of a white metal coating can be seen in places. It is heavily damaged and bent out of shape.
Simple sheet metal chapes like this were in use from the early 13th century (Ward Perkins 1967, 280) into the post-medieval period, but this example probably dates from th…

A complete, cast copper-alloy scabbard chape of probable late Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1700).
The chape is hollow and conical in shape. It is sub-triangular in pland and sub-oval in cross-section. The tapered end of the chape is now compressed (probably due to damage post deposition) but probably terminated in a globular knop. There are 3 circular perforations at roughly equidistant points sitting approximately 6.67mm below the mouth of the chape. The perforations have a maximum diameter of 2.93mm.
