A fragment of a post-medieval cast copper-alloy ruler. It consists of a cast strip with a graduated scale incised on one side. The scale marks out the inch, half inch, one quarter and one eighth of an inch. To either side of the longer inch marker is a number 2, presumably the two inch line on the scale. The rule is broken across each end. Suggested date is AD 1600-1800.

An incomplete copper alloy hinge of a wooden ruler of the Post Medieval period, probably dating from c. AD 1750 - c. AD 1800. The object is irregular in plan and broadly rectangular in section. It consists of two plates which have been joined together with what appears to be a large circular iron rivet at the base, and two smaller circular sectioned rivets at the top. The base is circular in plan with very heavy iron corrosion on the surface and at the edges. The base tapers then expands out to form a lozenge shaped plate. There is a circular sectioned rivet present below the left…

A copper alloy ruler fragment of post-medieval date. The ruler is formed on a cast strip with graduated scales incised on both sides: one side is marked with lines for the quarter inch, half inch and inch, while the opposing side has marks numbered 1-10 at each quarter inch. The rule is incomplete however and on this face the section numbered 1 and 2 is missing. The object is now bent and there is no evidence that this was a folding rule although with one end broken any hinge section could now be missing. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850.

Copper alloy ruler fragment. Cast strip with graduated scale incised on both its sides: on one side of one quarter and one eighth of an inch, and a finer scale down to one twentieth of an inch on the other, with graduations in larger units marked 7-10. An oval object of length 3.4mm at one end may be the burred remnant of a hinge formerly joining this part to another; the other end is broken. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Length: 45.5mm, Width: 6.3mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 3.35gms.

One side of a copper alloy hinge from a wooden ruler inscribed with the owners initials and date. The remaining side is formed of two plates joined by a rivet. The plates have a disk shaped lower parts joined together by a central iron rivet. A third circular plate from the other side would either have fitted between them or been attached to one side, allowing the hinge to swivel. These disks are integrally cast with thinner lozenge shaped upper plates with one separate circular sectioned copper alloy rivets through two of the corners. These rivets now connect the plates but would ori…
