Copper alloy possible rod fragment. A short fragment from an oval-section cast rod. From 'the same hole' as a nummus of 355-361 which was of comparable diameter and was itself reported along with several other minims. It might be tempting to associate those objects with this one, but this is not a coin and it is unlikely that suitable flans were salami-sliced from such a matrix. Suggested date: Late Roman, 200-410 Diameter: 8.3mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 2.11gms

Flake rod or core fragment. This item has a semi-circular cross-section. This has multiple flaking scars on both the ventral and dorsal side taken from several angles. The forward section is truncated making it impossible to know for certain what the original length was. Dark greyish blue flint with speckled grey patina, this patina has also formed in the broken forward edge.

A contorted fragment of rod of triangular section; the faces are concave and the flanges formed at their junctions are therefore acute. A moderate double twist at a point where the rod is bent appears to be a deliberate feature, but elsewhere very slight twists are likely to be due to distortion. There are no cut-marks, nor any crushing at the breaks. Maximum dimension (in contorted state) 55 mm; approximate extended length 200 mm; thickness 2.5 – 3.1 mm; weight 14.4 g

Lead rod. Cast rod of oval section. Attached fragments of solidified lead melt initially suggested this might be a sprue from the casting of multiple objects such as small shot. However, though attached to the same side of the rod, the excrescent fragments do not seem regular enough to be formed as casting ingates; they are perhaps evidence for lead-working. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 41.6mm, Diameter (rod): 5.7mm, Width (at adherent lumps): 13.4mm, Weight: 16.04gms

Copper alloy rod. A small rod with a facetted pointed end, a round-section mid-part and a flattened end. The finder kindly suggests this to be modern ‘green waste’; however, a black coating towards the flattened end might rather arise from the post-medieval custom of treating metal with oil, paint or lacquer. Now bent into a ring. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Length (as found): 24.1mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 3.4mm, Weight: 3.47gms

Lead rod. Cast rod of probably rounded section, bent into an S-shaped tight coil, and perhaps lightly hammered. Patinated. As the material lacks mechanical strength a function as a fastener or chain link may probably be ruled out. Description: Length of thick gold wire of circular cross-section, with a fresh granular break at one end and roughly rounded at the other (possibly an old break). It is curved along its length, forming about half of a circle about 35mm in diameter. The outer surface of the curve is smooth but the inner has slight longitudinal facets, as if hammered to shape.  It is slightly crushed and bent at the rounded end, and the damage has caused cracking to the metal here. Dimensions: Unbent length 50mm, bent into half-circle measuring 32.1 x 37.9mm. Diameter of rod 4.1…

Lead rod. A short cast cylindrical rod with flat ends; patinated and subsequently bent. The size and mass might permit this to have functioned as a supplementary load for a muzzle loading weapon. These were most commonly used in the 17th century. The extent of surface patina, however, could equally admit an earlier date.
