A cylindrical metal alloy bar with a pattern at either end. The pattern consists of a 'marigold' shape of eight equally spaced pointed petals. These are seen on bracelet terminals (Youngs, S. The Work of Angels, 25 and 26 page 44) of the early medieval period as well as on carved stone crosses and in manuscripts (but these are usually six pointed, not eight as is this example. The alloy, probably of copper,  is particularly dense and this may have been a stamp used to pattern leather or similar, although it could equally be a gaming piece or weight, alt…

Iron possible punch. A rectangular-section tapered bar with a thin wedge-shaped end and a probably flat top at the other thicker end. The mass suggests good survival of the metal core, and hence a probably relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850 Length: 75mm, Width: 21.6mm, Thickness: 12.6mm, Weight: 46.26gms

A post medieval to modern copper-alloy tool, perhaps an awl or punch. It is an elongated sub-cylindrical shape (cotton-reel), narrowing towards the centre. A smaller cylindrical section projects from the centre of one end followed by a narrow spike. The surface of the metal is covered with heavy iron corrosion, perhaps from an iron component that was originally attached. Damage to one side shows reveals that the object itself is copper-alloy, however. The object seems likely to be an awl, punch or similar tool for wood or leather working. See PAS records: SUR-225BC8 and WILT…

A copper alloy punch of an uncertain date. The punch is roughly of square section, tapering off to a small flat end. The edges are slightly bevelled. The top flat striking end is burred over, no doubt occurring though use. The sides appear to have been hammered up leaving some dents and voids after the manufacturing process. A broad date of Roman to Post Medieval is suggested. Length 42.6mm; Width: 6.4mm; Weight: 9.24g.

A complete cast copper-alloy punch of Post Medieval date. The upper half of the shaft is circular in cross-section with an angled flattened head, presumably from striking. The shaft widens slightly along its length before widening into the lower half which is tear-shaped and at its widest point is sub-rectangular in cross-section. The shaft then narrows into a rounded terminal. The surfaces of the object have mottle light green, light brown and black patination. It is overall very worn and abraded with some shallow areas of pitting across the shaft and on the head. The objec…

Cast copper-alloy punch or awl, likely dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-410. The item is 'T' shaped in form with a tapering cylindrical shaft and a transverse horizontal top bar terminal, which is also cylindrical in section. The top bar is also slightly tapered, being thickest at the centre and the point of attachment to the shaft than at either end. The central shaft is decrease in width to a terminal point which is now blunted. The patina generally worn with some areas of smooth, dark green coloured copper-alloy still remaining. However, the majority of the sur…

The die is lozenge shaped and has a 35.96mm integral tapering tang that would have fitted into a wooden handle, now missing. The die is decorated with a zoomorphic motif of two addorsed birds with pellets around. Dimensions: height: 40.24mm; length of die:15.43mm; width of die: 11.59mm; weight: 1.03g. A similar punch decoration with a zoomorphic motif of two addorsed birds was used on a scabbard depicted in Cowgill, Neergaard and Griffiths 1987:166 Plate 24, no 490. Reference: Cow…

Copper alloy possible punch. A small rectangular section shank with a flat wedge-shaped end, slightly expanded and rounded at the other end, where the first 15mm exhibits a rougher surface and a rounded section. The differential preservation may arise from a small tool being deposited with its wooden handle attached, or sheathed. Possibly a leatherworker’s tool, of which another possible example was reported from nearby. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Length: 49.5mm, Diameter (proximal or handle end): 5.7mm, Width: 4mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 4.65gms

Copper alloy possible punch. A slightly tapered rectangular bar with a broad [1.7mm] shallow groove down the centre of one side, expanded and flattened at its broader spatulate end, and narrowed and wedge-shaped, though not pointed, at the other. This might have been made from a spoon stem. A copper alloy tool might be used for leatherworking; an alternative identification as a stylus was initially entertained, but dismissed because even the narrower end is still too broad to write with. A possible punch, stamp or die of an unknown date, dating from the Roman through to Post-Medieval period, AD 43 - 1700. The object is mostly rectangular in plan and cross section but either end of the object is flared outwards. The flared ends are of an almost square but slightly rectangular shape. The main body of the object has four moulded bands and scratches to its surface. One of the flared ends is decorated with a large moulded possible a 'H' or 'I' which would have been used to stamp or punch an unknown object. The opposing end appears to be undecorated but has an uneven text…

A cylindrical copper alloy stamp measuring 16.5mm high with a body of 12.8mm diameter, with a collared terminal from which projects a fragment of a lathe-turned wooden handle around 23.2mm in length. The face of the stamp is a circular disc, 22.9mm in diameter, with a deeply incised ten pointed or petalled star / flower motif. Copper alloy punch. Cast rectangular section bar, bevelled at one end and lightly constricted, probably to fit as a square section tang into a handle, at the other. Extensive traces of black shiny material might suggest a maintenance regime entailing linseed oil, a technique for the preservation of non-ferrous metal especially favoured in the early post-medieval period. Bladed tools of copper alloy might be used with fabrics, to avoid the risk of rust-staining, or for leatherworking. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1750. Iron possible punch. A rectangular section narrow tool, tapering towards an angled point, probably original given light burring at its edges. The broader end, presumably hafted when in use is perhaps broken or disrupted in some way. This might, as it currently remains, have served to drive holes through thick leather, or it might alternatively been a blacksmith's punch for holing iron objects such as horseshoes. The surface condition is good for a ferrous metal object, and the mass indicates substantial survival of the metal core. A Post-Medieval date is therefore inferred. Suggested …
