Sandstone burnt stone. One half of a river-rounded Sandstone cobble, possibly flattened by use as a rubber or hone on one side, reddened by heat which has promoted splitting on the putative flat or polished side. The use of stones to heat water – for what purpose is the topic of speculation, ranging from cooking to bathing of the better sort – is especially characteristic of the later Bronze Age. Of course, stones could be heated or incorporated into hearths and campfires and water boiled at any later date as well. Suggested date: possibly Late Bronze Age to Iron Age,…

A fragment of fire-cracked stone or possible 'pot boiler' of unknown exact date. The fragment is roughly pyramidal in shape with a thick and two thinner layers of quartzite between a hard, reddish, fine-grained stone. The thick quartzite layer shows clear cracking caused by heat.
It is possible this stone was used in the heating of large quantities of water or was in the formation of a hearth. The stone has been found in an area with lithic implements and ceramic vessels dating to the Mesolithic to Medieval periods, thus a similar date has been applied.

An incomplete fire-cracked stone of unknown date (c. 4000 BC - AD 1800). The stone is fragmented with clear cracks running across its surface and a jagged, irregular break. Such an object would likely have been subjected to high heat causing it to crack and break. It is possible the object represents a pot boiler or was used in the fomration of a hearth.. The stone is reddish-brown in colour and is probably a fine grained sandstone.

Two late Neolithic to early Bronze Age chunks of burnt flint possibly used as a prehistoric pot boilers dating to 3300 - 1600 BC.
No.1: A large, irregularly shaped chunk, it shows broad flake removal scars so is a possible re-utilised multi-platform core or re-rejuvenation flake. The flint is opaque with a low-gloss patina, the surface is covered with craze-cracking with a whitish-grey appearance which is consistent with a heating and rapid cooling cycle. There are also reddish-brown ferrous stains, mainly to flake scar ridges.

Two incomplete fire-cracked cobbles of unknown date; stones which have been subjected to high heat causing them to crack and break. Similar objects from the same farm have been recorded as pot boilers, but it is also possible that these stones were used to form hearths, probably for an industrial process. The stone is probably a fine grained sandstone. The two pieces do not join.

A collection of eight fire-cracked flint nodules. The flint is unworked and has a cracked and broken surface caused by exposure to intense heat. Fire cracked flints were for a long time attributed to being pot boilers; however, the fact that flint shatters into sharp shards has made this theory more questionable. It is suggested that the flints that have been cracked in this way were used as fire surrounds and have fractured due to repeated heating and cooling in this environment.

A sub-ovoid piece of burnt flint/chert, possibly used as a pot boiler. The flint has been weathered, with much of the original surface degraded. Firecracked pebble, probably used as a pot boiler. The light brown stone is rounded and water worn, and only part survives - the broken edge is a jagged irregular break. The stone is a fine grained micaceous gritstone, and the surfaces display reddening and craze-cracking which is a typical result of heating.
It is 39.6mm long, 54.0mm wide and 50.4mm thick. It weighs 137g.
Pot boilers were used for thousands of years and are impossible to date accurately, but this one was found in association with worked flint and is thought likely to be Neolithic.
