The hoop is decorated with four groups of fine ribbing (two at the junction with the terminals). The terminals are covered with fine silver plate and decorated with punched ring and dot, the pairs at the terminal ends being smaller that the single ring-and-dot motifs and the narrow junction with the hoop. Copper alloy penannular brooch. Cast round section band with narrowed and sharply turned terminals which lie against the band in the same plane, Fowler type D, Mackreth type PEN f1. A probably drawn wire pin with flattened end is looped around the band. The band itself has a mustard-yellow cast while the pin is duller; this might represent gilding, or decayed white metal plating, or may include an applied surface and more recent treatment by the finder. A complete cast copper alloy pennanular brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43- 350.
The frame is oval in section, with slight pointing on the inside surface giving one side a pointed oval shape in cross section. The terminals are plain and rounded, and undifferentiated from the remainder of the frame. They appear slightly unbalanced, with one slightly larger than the other. The pin survives, and is slender and pointed, flattened in cross section with a triangular tip. There is no decoration on the frame, but the pin appears to have a possible vertical line incised upon it. Th…

An incomplete, late Iron Age to Roman copper alloy penannular brooch of Fowler's (1960) Type D2, dating broadly to the period 100BC - AD 400.
The brooch consists of a D-shaped ring with two globular ribs, at the edge of one of which it is broken. The surviving terminal is rectangular, pinched in the centre to create an hour-glass shape. Fowler (1960, 167) states that her Type D brooches become current in the late 1st century BC to early 1st century AD but appear to continue through the Roman period. The pin is missing and ring is pulled wide.
Its surviving length is 33.7mm. The …

A copper alloy penannular brooch of earlier Roman date (AD 100-250). The frame of the brooch is complete but distorted. Originally the brooch would have been penannular being almost a complete hoop with two terminals aligned. It is now an irregular stretched C shape being distorted by movement from its original shape. The body of the brooch is a flattened oval shape in section (width 2.5mm thickness 2.6mm). The terminal is formed of an expanded rounded bun shaped terminal with a raised (turned) collar behind and a deep grove separating the two - giving it a 'reel shape'. The external …

A copper alloy penannular brooch of earlier Roman date (AD 100-250). The brooch is incomplete and around 50% survives - including a single buffer like terminal.
