Post-medieval copper alloy asymmetrical flat mount with two round-sectioned integral attachment spikes on the reverse. Similar in form to many examples, e.g. SUR-2822FC, LIN-81712E and BH-B115A9, the latter with a list of others, but differing in one small detail: there are two small notches, rather than one, in the centre of the heart-shaped end. Both spikes, complete and not bent, taper along their length to a point and would not have been attached to leather with any confidence. Weight 1.52g. Length 19mm. Width 11.7mm. Thickness without spikes 1.2mm. Length of spikes 7.2mm. 16t…

Small silver shield-shaped flat mount with two holes, probably for separate rivets, one in the centre near the top and the other near the base. There are two incurved scallops on the top edge, with a point in the centre, and the front face is decorated along all three edges with a row of hand-punched dots. Weight 0.21g. Height 10mm. Width 9mm. Thickness 0.5mm.  Despite the handmade decoration, shields of this shape (with a double incurve to the top) are only found in the post-medieval period, most commonly from the 18th century onwards, and so this mount is likely to be 18th…

Copper-alloy object the shape of a human head with an integral rivet or attachment stud on the reverse, probably a Roman military belt fitting. It is heavily abraded and has lost most of its original surface. The head is oval when viewed face-on, tapering slightly asymmetrically in the lower half; the upper jawline from the ear to the chin is straight on one side and convex on the other.  It is plano-convex in cross-section; with the exception of the stud it is broadly flat on the reverse.  The eyes survive as two oval or sub-circular areas of the metal that have a slightly …

Incomplete post-medieval copper alloy mount, possibly from furniture: a lozengiform frame with concave sides of trapezoidal cross-section with two opposed pointed corners on the short axis, one corner a trefoil plate with remains of an iron rivet or nail and the fourth corner missing (non-recent break). No parallel has been noted, though concave-sided  lozengiform openwork mounts with integral spikes are known, e.g. SWYOR-155062 and FAKL-E53E74. Weight 2.40g. Extant length 34mm. Width 28mm. Thickness 1.7mm. The sides are 2.5 - 2.6 wide. 17th century.

Incomplete and undecorated medieval copper-alloy bar mount or strap stiffener. It is plano-convex in cross-section. It has an expanded and perforated circular lobe at its original centre and a smaller unperforated one at one end with an integral spike on the reverse. Opposite this the bar terminates in a worn break. The centre of the terminal lobe is approximately 22mm from the start of the central one. Similar to NMS-9D0243. A similar mount is shown in Read (2001: p23, No.141). Circa 1150-1350. Length 44mm. Arm width 4.5mm, thickness 2.6mm. Ce…

Post-medieval copper-alloy lozengiform mount. Hollow-backed with a double-stepped outside edge. It is not pierced. There is evidence of gilding or tinning on each of the two double-stepped edges, as seen from the front. On the reverse are inward-bent flat-cross-sectioned twin spikes, one terminating in a break mid-way. Similar in design to the smaller NMS-7430B3. 17th century. Length 28.7mm, width 23.2mm, sides 19.4mm, weight 4.5g.

Description: Fragment of a small gilded silver flat openwork mount, probably Roman in date, perhaps a rectangular fitting for belt or strap. It is sharply rectangular in cross-section, with parallel, straight sides and both ends broken. Two triangular apertures are present, along with one crescentic, and part of another. The reserved bars have a scrolly appearance, ending in roundels. No means of attachment has survived. One break is recent but the other is not, being covered in a ferrous deposit that has afflicted many metal objects on this site. Patches …

Medieval copper-alloy bar-mount from a belt. It has a central expanded circular lobe between a pair of opposing and tapering arms of plano-convex cross-section, with a smaller sub-circular lobe at each end. The terminal lobes are each perforated with a single rivet hole. The central lobe has a large circular blind hole or recess on the front. The metal at the rear, or base of this recess does have a tiny hole near the edge, but this seems to be accidental. The reverse is flat, but there is an irregularly-shaped and poorly defined depression behind the central lobe, apparently due to a …

Medieval cast copper-alloy mount, probably from a horse harness. It is discoidal and features the bust of a noblewoman embossed on the front in high relief. The reverse is moderately and irregularly concave, not as a negative impression of the figure on the front, but probably as an unintentional distortion of the disc. There are two small fragments missing from separate parts of the edge, to non-recent breaks. An additional fracture extends from near the centre of the mount, close to the left of the woman’s neck (from her point of view) to the edge. This passes though a sma…

Medieval copper alloy mount, a flat and undecorated rectangular plate probably of sheet, with a single, separate rivet near one short side. Incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy cross-shaped mount. It has a large sub-square element at the centre with slightly convex edges and front face. A cylindrical boss projects a short distance forward from the centre of this and is decorated on its own front face with a pair of concentric circular ridges, the larger one at the very edge. A sub-circular ring of tiny shallow triangular indentations surrounds the boss.  Four short arms project from the sub-square element, one from each edge, but one is incomplete. Fragment of a probably Late Saxon copper alloy flat mount with curvilinear engraved decoration on one face. The greater part of the edge is the result of ancient breaks. A curving edge near a rivet or attachment hole and its straight continuance past a triangular aperture are unbroken, along with a rounded notch which may be part of either an attachment hole or a decorative aperture. The significance of the engraved ornament is uncertain, but it is apparently asymmmerical. The surfaces of the metal are dull purplish. Weight 3.65g. 23.4 x 21.8 x 1.2mm. Probably 11th century.

Parts of the sides, including the tops of the inward-pointing hearts, are intact.  At one end two non-recent breaks flank an outward-pointing heart while its counterpoint lies between a break and an apparently unbroken pointed projection. Fragment of a medieval gilded copper-alloy horse harness mount. It appears to have been once flat, now slightly bent, and circular. About forty per cent of the original circular edge is extant. The other two edges are worn breaks: one is quite jagged and truncates a small circular hole at the original centre. The front face bears part of a shallow flat circular depression, concentric with the central hole and the outer edge. Description: Unusual partly gilded silver and niello-inlaid mount of early-medieval date, perhaps broken and repaired. It is rectangular, thick and hollowed on the reverse, and decorated in Carolingian-style relief with openwork elements. The decoration is based around a bold raised flat-topped diagonal cross or saltire dividing the square into quarters, with  a worn boss in the centre and at the end of each arm. At the end of each arm of the saltire is a low-relief leaf motif, with a sunken, lobed centre and an outcurved leaf to either side which is inlaid with a niell…
