Fragment of an Early Anglo-Saxon lead model, used for manufacturing Cruciform brooches. The fragment comes from the top of the zoomorphic foot. At the top is a transverse collar. Below the collar are two prominant raised eyes, each set within a deep crescentric panel. A raised rib separates the panels. The underside is smooth and appears finished. On the reverse is a hollow cylinder set vertically. The function of this cylinder is unclear though it could have been used to contain a pin which connected the various sections of the brooch. Several fragments of lead cruciform brooches hav…

Medieval cast lead possible model or trial-piece or a patron for a harness pendant. Small, shield-shaped with a vertical unpierced lug springing from upper edge of the shield-shaped body. The shield has a chamfered outside edge and bears in relief: A Latin cross between four pellets. A similar but slightly larger find is illustrated in Ashley 2002, 4, Fig.3. Neither of these two finds relates to typical harness pendants of the period and the identification of both as a patrix for harness pendants is open to question. Alternatively they may be models or weights.…

A lead-alloy object in the form of a Medieval shield-shaped harness pendant. The upper surface of the shield bears what is probably a pseudo-heraldic device comprising four horizontal bars, each defined by an upper and lower ridge and containing three pellets, or 'bezants'. An indented saltire near the bottom of the design is probably a casting flaw. The right-angled loop extends from the centre of the flat top side. There is a circular depression on either side of this loop, but the two do not join up to create an aperture. The underside of the pendant is flat and plain, and the s…

A Modern stoneware ceramic egg from May 2012. The egg is hollow and has been stamped "2664 London", it appears to be empty. The surface of the egg has been smoothed in a spiral pattern. This is one (no. 2664) of 5000 eggs which were fired in a wood-fired kiln and then laid out in the shape of the River Thames on the South Downs, Sussex, as a work of art, photo here: http://riveregg.wordpress.com/2012/05/06/p1020100/. A plaque of a bird made out of pipeclay. Geoff Egan writes: "one of a very varied series of figurines (mostly of humans and some of animals) and models of objects (fire bellows, even an early steam-train engine). The last is an indicator of how long they went on, with the series in this country starting off with saints in the late C15th"..."It is very rough indeed, though it could have been painted (possibly it would only satisfy a child). Certainly folk art - was it something like a fairing?...I suspect late C17th/C18th is most probable (as a date)". Fairings first made an appear…

Cast lead model for a gem or cameo, depicting a male bust facing right wearing a patterned jacket with ruffled collar and a close-fitting narrow-brimmed hat with a fringe of hair visible below, and a tassle descending down the back, perhaps in the manner of an Italian Renaissance portrait. If the original was of very fine quality then this lead copy may have been cast as a curio from a mould taken from a gem. It could perhaps have been made for a seller or collector somewhat later, giving a cheap, robust version to show around for approval, and to give an accurate idea of what was on o…

Incomplete lead possible Roman brooch model. It consists of a strip of lead now bent at 90° in two places and weighs 5.1g. It is 19.5mm in bent length. The object is flat to the reverse and slightly rounded to the front, with grooved decoration in the form of lines running the length of the object. One end of the object is flat and rounded (4.8mm wide, 1.4mm thick) while the other end is broken (7.4mm wide, 3.4mm thick and D-shaped in section). The object would have measured c.47mm pre-bending. 1st-2nd century.

A Modern limestone model of an Egyptian scarab (19th – early 20th century). The model has been carved to form a three-dimensional scarab beetle and the flat under-side is carved with a cartouche and hieroglyphics. Dr Stephen Quirke notes that this is an interesting example and similar examples were usually discarded from collections as not ancient. The cartouche (name-ring) containing the hieroglyphs is an often-copied motif – the signs themselves are accurate enough and read Menmaatra, which is the throne-name of king Sety I, about 1290 BC, father of king Ramses II – the h…

Neolithic/ Bronze Age arrowhead rough-out (probably), measuring 44.9x28.1x8mm. It weighs 8.60g. The dorsal face has 80% cortex except around the edges where working has removed it. In addition is 15% heavy patination. The ventral face is brown flint with a little edge damage. At the proximal end is a slight projection, which is probably too thin and twisted (from the line of the flint) to be made into a barb. The right dorsal edge has abrupt working whereas the left dorsal edge looks rather more damaged.

A piece of cut copper alloy measuring 31.5x25x(max)5mm (min 4.5mm). It weighs 23.09g (0.815 oz). It is octagonal in shape, the sides of similar length (longest 13mm, shortest 9mm) though rather crudely done, suggesting it has not been shaped to be a decorative fitting, for example. On one face is one faint and one clear design, apparantly similar, of an oval outline created by tiny punch marks and approximately 11.5x9mm (clear) and 12x10mm (less clear) in size. The clearer design shows a pair of clasped hands inside the border, by a series of diagonal grooves. The less clear design i…

Incomplete rectangular lead object, probably a model for an Early Saxon wrist clasp, with a break at one narrow end, comprises three conjoined circular mouldings, each with a central dot, and a flanking rib decorated with transverse grooves. On the reverse a squashed projection towards the broken end is set at right angles to the long axis. If a wrist clasp was the intended product then it would have been of Hines 1993 Form B18 c. However, there are no attachment holes (nor a spigot nor lug as used for attachment to the sleeve in Form 18 b), and there is no hook or eye for junction wi…

The downturned almond shaped eyes are deeply incised and the slit for the mouth is not symmetricaslly under the rather fleshy nose. The hair is pulled back into a bun at the nape of the neck. The hairline is delineated by a row of incised S shapes. There are no ears shown.
