Copper alloy metalworking debris. An oval fragment of solidified copper alloy melt of plano-convex section, possibly from the casting ingate at the top of the mould used for casting a small object. The oval flat surface would represent the upper side with shrinkage lines resulting from the cooling of molten metal. The ingate would be broken from the object cast and was presumably intended to go back into the melting pot. This is an unusual example of metalworking debris whose form places it at a particular stage of the casting process, rather than the more common evidence for spillage.…

Iron and copper alloy metalworking debris. A compact oval cake made up of three discrete layers or components. The earliest appears to comprise fragments of copper alloy which has congealed on a flat smooth surface leaving a glossy surface to the object. The massiest largest central part is a metallic ferrous cake [giving a strong magnetic response] with an intermittently vesicular appearance, of thickness 45mm. Copper alloy and gold metalworking debris. A fragment of solidified copper alloy melt with hard thin white material, possibly from a spread of broken shell, trapped in what is taken to be its lower surface as it has set. Much of the object may be made up of a solidified trail of poured metal. A concave area on the opposite, upper, side has two separate flecks or fragments of gold at its edge, perhaps originally applied as a gilded surface for an object which has been recycled. Copper alloy metalworking debris. A straight fragment of solidified copper alloy melt which has set in the basal angle – which was about 90 degrees – of a straight-sided and flat-bottomed trough, probably while it was tilted at a slight angle for the metal to run into and be trapped by the angle; and with a protruding spur at one end. An amorphous glob of gold, that survives as evidence of gold working of an uncertain date. Description: The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck to a small round terminal. Discussion: The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object does not qualify as Treasure.

An unidentified cast lead object, possibly a well and runners from casting metal into a multiple mould, of unknown date, but most likely to be Post Medieval, AD 1500 - 1800. It is cylindrical in shape with a much smaller spike projecting from the centre of one end. this tapering spike has ben bent into loop. This could be to act as a suspension loop, or may be damage. The body has four integral cast tapering spikes projecting from the centre of the sides at equally spaced intervals. The arms are twisted and bent. The arms all appear to have incomplete terminal ends, the angled ends…

Two pieces of lead metal working debris of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 -1800. The larger of the two is oval on one face, which appears to be a solidified droplet or puddle, with the edge rounded from surface tension. On the other face, the surface is irregular and pitted (from contact with a rough floor?) and there is a central thicker circular area, perhaps suggesting the spilled lead was in and around a circular depression. It is 29.6mm long, 28.3mm wide and 8.1mm thick. It weighs 35.74g. The smaller is oval with two small, circular projections on one fac…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. Two fused fragments of spillage from an episode of casting or recycling. Two rounded solidified fragments have solidified on a flat surface, one partly overlapping the other, the uppermost including three distinct large droplets which have landed in sequence. The appearance is altogether distinct from that of the more frequently reported smaller and more irregular droplets of cuprous spillage, and suggests the pouring of a eutectic alloy. Suggested date: Unknown, Later Bronze Age to Post-Medieval, 1000 BC-AD1800 Length: 49.2mm, Width: 34.5mm, Thi…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. Three fragments of solidified copper alloy waste, of lengths 30mm, 26mm and 15mm, with vesicular zones and trapped darker material, perhaps ash, slag or fuel residue. These fragments all seem lighter than the solidified melt thought to be associated with episodes of casting or recycling, and may point to an episode of primary manufacture. A collection of 13 pieces of metal working debris of an uncertain exact date, but probably dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period (c. AD 1300-1700). The objects are of irregular size and appear to be copper alloy and lead alloy in constituency. Fragments of casting waste are difficult to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more accurate date to be suggested. The suggested date given above is in keeping with objects found in the same locale dating to within this time period.
