A small piece of copper alloy metal working debris, of probable Prehistoric date, c. 2100 BC - AD 43. The potential ingot consists of a slightly irregular bar of copper alloy with an oval cross-section, both ends are abraded, but the object appears complete. There are no markings on the surface which has a dark brown patina, where this has been lost it reveals a bright green core. Dimensions: length 56.1mm; width 11.1mm; thickness 8.5mm; weight 24.02g. Whilst similar objects have been identified as Early Medieval based on comparison to Anglo-Scandinavian silver ingots (e.g. LANC…

A piece of copper alloy working waste, largely undatable but found in an area producing large amounts of Roman material and may be associated with this activity (although Post-medieval material is also being recovered). The object has an irregular pitted surface, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and has a concave reverse. Length: 28.0mm, Width: 23.0mm, Thickness: 11.0mm, Weight: 14.26g.

An irregular, undatable piece of lead waste. No form is visible, and the object appears to be product of a large number of congealed lead drips. Length: 43.0mm, Width: 32.7mm, Thickness: 28.7mm, Weight: 96.33g. This object was recorded due to its proximity to St. Nicholas' Priory (also known as Barlynch Priory, HER: MSO8840), founded by William De Say during the reign of Henry II (AD 1154-1189).

Two irregularly shaped pieces of copper alloy casting waste of uncertain date. The first (34.39g) is broadly sub rectangular but with a small extension which may represent a point where molten copper had escaped, the other (27.13g) is flatter but is significantly more irregularly shaped on one face, with several pits and channels probably created by corrosion, trapped within some of these are traces of charcoal. Although undatable, these represent a larger sample also found in the field and may suggest a specialist metal working site.

Four amorphous lumps of copper alloy metal working debris, either casting waste or slag. One is possibly a casting jet as it is conical with a flattish oval base, it is very worn 70.52 grams. Two are very irregular with the bubbly structure typical of high temperature working, 90.49 and 45.99 grams. The larger piece is rough where air bubbles have been broken and worn leaving sharp edges. The last is a broken part of a flat piece where metal has cooled and solidified on a flat surface, 51.36 grams . Material such as this is undatable due to its undiagnosic nature but may indicate s…

A fragment of a leaded copper-alloy droplet probably the result of metal working debris. It is flat on one side as if having cooled on a flat surface. The top of the droplet could be mistaken for a cast object as it has a raised central pellet and is surrounded by three further pellet like droplets but there is no clear form. There is a break on one side in which white corrosion can be seen, showing that although the surface corrosion is green, that there is a large amount of lead in the alloy. The droplet is 29.4mm in diameter, 10.9mm thick and weighs 22.05g. Material such as this …

Lump of solidified melted copper alloy material from of high temperature working. The lump has numerous solidified air bubbles suggesting it was brought to a full molten heat. However in less fully melted sections their appears to be the remains of circular copper alloy disks which were melted to create the lump. The designs on the disks are not clear. Most are only visible in the sides as the remains of stacks but a few could be measured and range from 13.8 to 11.2mm in diameter and are 1.0 to 1.2mm thick. The lump is 46.4mm by 32.7mm by 18.1mm and weighs 52.91 grams. It is clea…

Mis-cast copper alloy item. The piece has a amorphous blob of solidified molton metal with a short cylindrical extension to one side. The cylinder has an old break at the end opposite the blob and a double incised line around the centre. The cylinder may be part of a miscast artefact such as a candlestick or it may be from an aperture where metal was poured into a mould. It is 32.6mm by 38.5mm and 13.7mm thick, the cylinder is 13.4mm in diameter and 15.4mm long. It weighs 35.74 grams.

Three amorphous blobs of copper alloy with rounded shapes that suggest they are cooled runs of liquid metal and two posslbe mis-cast pieces or other waste. Of the latter two one is a flat piece of copper alloy with one roughly right angle corner and the opposite edge bent up at c.70 degrees, 22.65grams. The other is a thicker flat piece with again one edge bent up through a curve to 70 degrees and the opposite edge turned down at a right angle, with an irregular break across it, c.19.44 grams. Both have many air bubbles in them, similar to the other casting waste. The other pieces we…

One very large piece of probable lead smelting slag. David Dungworth, English Heritage (pers. comm.) suggests that this identification is probably correct, but is difficult to confirm without metallurgical analysis. Found close to several pieces of copper alloy metal working debris, although it is unlikely that they are connected in some way. Although lead was mined in the Mendip area of Somerset during the Roman period, unrefined lead ore of this date is unlikely to have travelled far from its production area and so an early date can probably be ruled out. This fragment is therefore …

Lump or 'cake' of copper alloy metal working debris. The lump has a flat base, mishapen sides and a rounded top with a sub-circular depression roughly in the centre. Such objects are often indicative of Bronze Age metalworking. However, due to their basic form and consequent lack of diagnostic features they are largely undateable, unless found in association with other dateable objects.
