Glass Cullet; Manufacturing waste. Blob of white (colourless, but with a green-blue tint) glass, with a curling 'tail'. It is uncertain whether this represents glass working, or the accidental melting of glass in a fire. Suggested date: Roman to Post-Medieval, 70-1800. Weight: 1.69gms.

An unfinished bone or ivory cuboid die, probably of late Medieval or Post Medieval date. The number 6 is indicated by drilled dot marks on one of the sides; the other 5 sides are blank. The die is similar in style to PAS record PUBLIC-96A5C9, but cannot be assigned to one of Potter's variant, due to the missing number arrangements. Bone dice were also used in the Roman period however, so an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The die is irregular in shape and measures 8.5mm by 8.3mm by 8.1mm, and weighs 1.2g.

The left valve of an oyster shell with a central perforation. Description: The perforation has been made from the inside of the shell to the outside and is 14mm x 15mm with three staight sides and one outwardly-curved side. The perforation has been made carefully with minimal damage to the shell and, along with the precise shape, suggests it was made deliberately rather than through accidental damage. Measurements: 79.52mm in length, 75.06mm in width and 46.07g in weight. Discussion: Perforated oyster shells are found in many archaeologicaly-secure contexts dating from the Ro…

Copper alloy Manufacturing Waste. Two lumps of melted copper alloy. The smaller appears to incorporate the part-melted upper bow and spring of a dolphin brooch, which would argue this metalworking to date to the late 1st century AD - the spring-fastened dolphin brooch being current AD 40-60, after which hinged versions became more common, the type falling out of use some time after AD80. Dimensions cited below are for the larger fragment. Lengths: 27mm and 36.6mm, Widths: 20.8mm and 26mm, Weights: 19.14gms and 32.39gms.

Glass Manufacturing waste. A fragment of melted glass or cullet. All edges are rounded by melting, so it will have been subjected to temperatures in excess of 600 degrees centigrade. This makes it impossible to determine whether this was originally window or vessel glass. This object complements other evidence for high temperature processes in the area. The glass is not iridescent but bears a slight whitish surface deposit formed after it was melted, which suggests it may either be of Roman or recent date. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Weight: 2.78gms.

Circular shale core from the manufacture of armlets. On one face is a square, off-centre recess with a slight bevel and on the other is a conical indentation (type B2 (J.B. Calkin, 1953, "Kimmeridge Coal Money" - The Romano-British Shale Armlet Industry, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society, Volume 75, pages45 - 67)). These result from the shale blank being held in place on a lathe by a chuck. Hole dimensions are 8.82 mm x 9.69 mm.

Lead Manufacturing waste. A scrap of cast lead sheet bearing scars from a rouletting wheel. This tool was possibly used to cut the lead sheet; some of the marks describe a circle of 38mm diameter, partially defining a disc, though other marks are apparently randomly distributed on both sides of the sheet. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 67mm, Width: 46mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 42.83gms.

A Post Medieval pinner's bone (16th century). This tool is made from a cow or horse metapodial roughly trimmed at one end to a sub-rectangular shape (presumably for ease of holding rigid), and more finely trimmed to a rectangular shape at the other. At this end there are a series of grooves longitudinally, on which pin shafts are thought to have ben rested while they were being filed sharp. There is some damage and cracking to the working end. Dimensions: length: 146.35mm; width: 27.64mm; thickness: 17.32mm; weight: 84.92g. Notes: These are relatively common finds from 16th century de…
