A Post Medieval pinner's bone dating to the 16th century. This tool is made from a piece of a long bone that at one end has been trimmed and three sides have been roughly squared off. At this end there is one longitudinal grove on each of the squared off sides, on which pin shafts are thought to have been placed while they were being filed sharp. One half of the distal epiphysis is missing. Similar pinner's bones on the database are LON-CEBBB1 and LON-FAB471. Dimensions: length: 167.2mm; width: 35.46mm; thickness: 26.17mm; weight: 122.34g. Fragment of antler manufacturing waste, including the crown and part of the tine of the antler. The antler has been sawn up and this part discarded after use. The interior has been hollowed but is not smooth and still contains a large amount of the inner spongy material suggesting it has not been hollowed out as a socket. The antler is a grey-cream in colour with some orange staining possibly from contact with iron material on the foreshore. Antler is a commonly used material throughout history, especially in the later Early Medieval period. See MacGregor 1985 fig.42 for a demonstrati…

A Post Medieval pinner's bone (15-16th century). This tool is made from a cow or horse metapodial roughly trimmed at one end to a sub-rectangular shape (presumably for ease of holding rigid), and more finely trimmed to a rectangular shape at the other. At this end there are a series of grooves longitudinally, 2 per facet, on which pin shafts are thought to have ben rested while they were being filed sharp. These are relatively common finds from 16th century deposits in London, notably on the sites of former religious houses following the Dissolution (Egan 2005:138). Dimensions: len…

Two fragments of Late Medieval - Modern bone button or bead making waste fragment. These are two worked fragments from a long bone, cut to form flat plates. On the larger fragment there is one complete circular hole and one incomplete circular hole. On the smaller fragment there are one complete circular hole and four incomplete circular holes where discs have been cut from the fragments. This sort of object is impossible to date. MacGregor notes that they are found in Late Medieval to modern contexts (1985, 101). Dimensions: diameter of perforations on larger fragment: 10.06mm; …

A fragment of manufacturing waste or a broken unknown object. The object is formed of a rectangular block that tapers from one end to the other, giving an almost triangular appearance. At the widest end is a rectangular projection on one side. On the side with the projection is a vertical engraved line running the length of the object, with a second transverse line following the edge of the projection. On the projection are four circular impressions, two either side of the engraved line. The back of the object is incredibly rough with saw marks visible on the edge of the object, s…

A piece of antler working waste probably dating from the Early Medieval - Medieval (410-1500AD). This is a fragment of an antler tine where the tip and base have been sawn off roughly; two sides have been sawn down and a hole drilled in one end through the cancellus (spongy tissue in the centre of the antler). This piece could have been intended to be made into a handle or to have strips removed to be used in objects such as combs. Red deer was the most common species of antler used in this period. An Early Medieval - Medieval antler fragment, a tine offcut: manufacturing waste (c.9th -12th century). The fragment is from the tip of an antler tine, commonly discarded during the manufacturing process. The base has saw-marks; there are no other signs of working or use. The antler is probably from a red deer (Cervus elaphus). Finds such as this one are very common on Anglo-Scandinavian and Late Saxon sites (c.9th-12th C), and the antler working industry goes into decline after then, but this fragment cannot be dateed definitively. Refer to MacGregor et al 1999: Bone and Ant…
