An incomplete copper-alloy door from a Medieval lantern, probably dating from AD 1300 - 1400. The object has been made from a semicircular piece of sheet metal, the straight side of which has been folded backwards. One end of the semi-circle is missing, as is part of the curved edge. The door has been perforated with one complete quatrefoil, and two or more of truncated form (trefoils or other shapes). Near the curved outer side of the door are two further small perforations, one containing the remains of an iron rivet. The function of these holes is uncertain but they probably …

A copper-alloy element from a lantern, dating to the first to third century AD. The hanger comprises a flat, rectangular-section plate. At one end, this plate tapers, becomes circular in section and is bent back on itself to form a hook. This hook terminates in an onion-shaped knop. The inner surface of the hook is extremely worn, at the point where it is bent. At the other end, the rectangular-section plate expands to form a circular plate. This plate possesses a central circular piercing. A copper-alloy circular ring is threaded through this loop. The ring has a thickness of 3mm and…

A fragment of the casing of a copper alloy lantern, dating to the medieval period. The fragment is a broadly rectangular sheet of copper alloy with quatrefoils in openwork down the right hand side; two quartefoils are complete while two others are on the edge of the now-broken sheet. This side of the sheet has been gilded, while the reverse has not. A lantern and a sliding hatch for a lantern are discussed in Egan & Pritchard (1988:150-151, fig. 118), both of which show the same style of decoration as that recorded here. The examples in Egan & Pritchard are dated to c. AD 1350-1400, a…

A copper-alloy possible medieval lantern top dating to 14th-early 15th century. The artefact is circular in plan and concave in cross section. It is decorated with two sets of two parrallel circular lines, the first is located just above the rim, the second set are broadly halfway between the rim and the central circular projection. The central circular perforation contains a piece of copper-alloy sheet metal which has been bent in the form of a figure of eight to create two loops. A large circular perforation is located on and breaks the two circular circumferential incisions loca…

A copper alloy decorative fitting, possibly from a lantern and dating to the medieval period. The fitting is formed from one sheet of copper alloy, moulded and folded length-ways. This has created a rounded top with open, flared sides, and the base of the sides also flare outwards again. The cross section is similar in shape to an inverted V with a pinched and rounded base. There are three crosses each formed of four punched holes arranged along the centre of each long side as decoration. It is possible that this is a decorative mount from a medieval lantern. A similar example is pict…

A fragment of sheet copper alloy, originally recorded as an unidentified object, but possibly from a lantern of Medieval date, AD 1250 - 1400. It consists of a triangular sheet of copper alloy which has been perforated. In the apex of the triangle is a small perforation in the shape of a trefoil of three circles, one circle being slightly smaller than the others. Beneath this and above the base of the triangle are further perforations, also composed of circles, which may have been conjoined trefoils or a quatrefoil with a central perforation. However, part of the base of the triangle …

A copper-alloy door from a Medieval lantern. The object has been made from a semicircular piece of sheet metal, the straight side of which has been folded backwards. At either end of the door, projecting beyond the aforementioned fold, there is an aperture of between 2 and 3mm, into which a now-missing axis bar would probably have originally fitted. The door has been perforated with three whole quatrefoils, plus a futher four of truncated form (trefoils). Spaced around the curved outer side of the door are three further small perforations. The function of these holes is uncertain, a…

An incomplete and rather squashed sheet copper alloy Medieval (1250-1400) lantern, now in eight pieces. It would originally have been cylindrical in shape. It is missing a door (probably of transparent horn) to the front, several binding strips, a handle, base and top. It measures c.197mm in length (185mm without rectangular projection) and 121.02mm in (squashed) width, and weighs 113.16g. The patina overall is smooth and shiny with patches that are rougher both on the inside and outside surfaces. The largest fragment of the lantern (c.147x121.02mm) consists of just over half of the…

An extremely unusual and almost complete copper-alloy lantern of Roman date. The lantern is formed from two distinct components comprising a detachable dome-shaped lid with simple incised decoration and possible traces of a white metal coating and a cylindrical body comprising two uprights and a circular base plate with feet, three of which are now missing. Fragments of the frame and lid are missing due to old breaks, as is the probable horn surround that would have originally formed the cylindrical shape of the lantern and enabled the light from inside to diffuse without being blown …

Copper alloy rectangular hinge plate, probably from the hinge of the door or cover of a lantern aperture, a thick evenly folded sheet with two hinge loops, one flush with one edge and the other nearer the centre. Three disc-headed rivets (one missing) with, between them, two trefoil cut-outs on the attachment edge. The cut-outs are grooved, in the manner of strap-ends (e.g. Egan and Pritchard 1991, nos. 671-5) on the reverse which is also decorated along both sides and edges with engraved rocker-arm. Both faces were clearly intended to be seen. There are traces of gilding on one rivet…

Sheet copper alloy lantern-top diameter 47mm, thickness >1mm, weight 3.8g. The artefact is made from a circular sheet of copper alloy. There are four holes 1.7mm in diameter around that outside, these would have been rivet holes that attached the top to the main cylinder of the lantern. A 4mm diameter hole in the centre would have held a suspension loop and a further 7mm ole off centre would have acted as a vent. Decoration on the topside comprises of a thick engraved border with hatching on the inside, an area of which expands into an arm that spirals around the centre hole. A qu…

Roughly triangular fragment of a medieval copper alloy object with four ovoid apertures. The straight edge is original, while the other sides are not, with the breaks running across seven further apertures. There is a very slight curve so that with the straight edge levelled up the object appears to set at c.40° from the vertical. On the outer or convex face at the straight edge a rounded notch is flanked by a pair of slight protuberances. Rocker-arm engraving, now rather faint, is visible on the outer face. A very similar fragment from West Acre (HER 30821) was considered as perhaps…
