Copper alloy possible ladle fragment. Cast fragment from the edge of a broad shallow bowl with part of a thin tapering straight-sided handle. A rectangular hole close to the meeting of bowl and stem is filled with rust, suggesting the former presence of a separate iron element here. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 44.0mm, Width: 40mm, Thickness (stem): 3.7mm, Weight:16.30gms

Copper alloy possible ladle fragment. Cast concavo-convex plate in the naturalistic form of a miniature scallop shell, and with around section stem oddly at right angles to the plane of the bowl - were they aligned, this could be from sugar tongs. This feature has previously been observed (e.g. NLM-5EBDD4). Given the thickness of the stem, however, it seems unlikely the object has been bent to its current shape. This presumably formed part of a table service set. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Height: 89.8mm, Width: 23.8mm, Weight: 5.15gms

A copper alloy fragment of a medieval (AD c.1200-c.1500) probable ladle, consisting of a rivetted fitting, possibly for attaching the handle to the bowl. Overall, the fragment measures 53.7mm long, 14.9mm wide and 7.9mm thick. It weighs 9.28g. The fragment is sub-rectangular in shape and is formed from two copper alloy strips, each c.0.7mm thick, that have been riveted together using six or possibly seven rivets. The strips have been folded in half. The outer face of the object is blackened with soot.

Possibly part of a medieval skimmer or ladle. The object is a distorted sheet of copper-alloy with rectangular slots around the perimeter. The exterior surface has patches of sooting, which would support the identification of a skimmer or ladle. This particular piece is likely to be the handle attachment plate. For similar items see Egan (1998), p. 157, fig. 126.

A cast copper-alloy Post-Medieval spoon/ladle fragment. The fragment represents approximately half of the bowl fo the spoon, with the handle missing. The fragment is half-oval shaped, with two cracks along the edges. The broken edge is roughly cut. At the pointed end there is a breakage mark where the handle presumably was attached. A rose stamp can be seen at the pointed end.

A socketed handle and body fragment of cast copper alloy Medieval to Post-Medieval (c.1400-1650) vessel, probably a ladle. It measures 54.45mm in length and weighs 29.2g. The handle would presumably have been of wood. The socketed handle measures 16.11x14.64mm at the open end (internal 12.38x11.27mm) with a c.5mm diameter rivet hole on the underside for a retaining pin. The socket is 46.27mm deep. It tapers to 14.06x12.12mm (external) just before the wall of the vessel. The surviving body fragment measures 21.56x13.82x3.50mm. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used…

An incomplete copper alloy ladle or large spoon. The bowl is quite narrow and may be described as 'fig shaped'. The stem of the ladle is decorated with incised design comprising two longitudinal lines with curved chevrons between. In the centre of the stem the lines are broken by a lozenge shaped design with knops on each corner and filled with straight lines at a c.100 degree angle. The crown of the ladle, which is incomplete, widens out from the neck and may have been circular in form. There is a triangular attachment point both here and in to the bowl of the ladle, suggesting tha…

Perforated copper alloy plate length 38mm, width 30mm, thickness >1mm, weight 4.89g. One edge of a heavily truncated copper alloy sheet which has a series of rough oval holes that has been punched trough. The remaining edge is curved. It is possible that this is part of a skimmer, this is a perforated ladle used to remove items from stew pots. Examples have been found in excavated contexts in London (Egan, 1998, 155-157). These utensils are thought to date to 1300-1550.

The object is probably a type of ladle, scoop or particularly large spoon. It is fragmentary and two fragments remain. It is made of cast copper alloy. It is difficult to date, but is probably either Roman or most likely the early Post Medieval period. The first fragment is a portion of the bowl and integral handle. The handle is oval shape in section, which tapers towards the terminal. The handle is very short, 37.4mm, and it is uncertain whether the terminal is broken or not, as it is quite flat and there are patches of the patina on the terminal. A fragment of the bowl remain…
