A lead alloy artefact that is probably an inkwell. It is a hollow cube in shape, the four sides are plain, as is the square base. In the open top, a three sided flat piece of lead has been inserted, forming a top with a smaller square opening in it. This has been fixed in place possibly with molten lead. One side has a deep scratch across it, another has a semi-circular piece missing for the base. It is crude but the shape is reminsiscent of other lead alloy inkwells recorded on the database, for example LANCUM-939301, which is dated to AD 1600-1900. Dimensions: 28mm high and app…

Lead or lead-alloy inkwell of probable post medieval date, c1600-1800AD. The inkwell is broadly sub-rectangular in plan.  In profile the inkwell is broadly trapezoid in shape with a dome, slightly inset from the edges, on the top. At the centre of the dome is a large circular hole, for the ink.  Around the base of the dome are four further smaller holes, presumably for holding quills. Each of the four sides is decorated with two vertical grooves which border a vertical concave recess. The edges of the inkwell are rounded and the base is relatively flat. The inkwell is a mid-g

A lead alloy box shape that is probably an inkwell. It was, before damage, a cube formed of seperate plates of lead alloy. The top is formed by folding the four side plates, which have been cut into triangles, into the centre. Withit the area made by doing this is a hollow circular tube of lead set so that the one of the open ends stands above the other plates, and the other probably reaches to near the base of the object, although this is not visible. The cenral section of the tube is square. This would have been to guide the pen into the ink. It has been damaged s…

A cast lead inkwell, dating from the Post-medieval period, AD 1500 - 1800. It is sub-circular in form with straight sides which are rounded at the top and lead into a deep circular depression in the upper side. At the centre of the depression is a circular aperture leading into a chamber. The aperture is surrounded by a slightly raised ring In the depression surrounding the ring are two further circular holes, diametrically opposed. The base of the inkwell is concave with a seam visible between it and the sides, suggesting it was cast in two pieces. The base has one flattened side, w…

Pottery. Brown Stoneware inkwell. A small complete cylindrical stoneware vessel with a rounded rim. The demand for ink would have exploded after the introduction of compulsory education for children by the Education Act of 1870. This had a particular effect in rural areas, where children had been accustomed to assist with agricultural work at busy times of the year. Most of these common finds are likely to date to after that time. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1870-1900 Diameter: 38.7mm, Height: 61.2mm, Weight: 86.50gms

Lead inkwell, as kindly identified by the finder. A cast hollow vessel with a sub-rectangular base and converging indented sides with a half-round cylindrical moulding at each corner. The base is now lightly indented and bears scratches which might include graffiti, of which a small chalice-shaped feature is perhaps the most convincing. Patinated.
