A near-complete iron tool of possible Late Iron Age or Roman date. The object has an uneven crescentic blade with rounded shoulders. The open socket of the tool has a rivet hole for securing the handle in place, and iron corrosion adheres to the area around the blade and socket junction. The blade has been worn down to its current shape through use. This tool may be an axe or adze but also possibly a hoe. The open socket is characteristic of pre-medieval tools. Similar examples of this database include NLM-B747A1 (hoe) and SWYOR-25D974 (socketed axe). Check Catalogue of Romano-British…

A cast iron socketed hoe/axe type implement, possibly Roman in origin c. 45 - 400 AD. It has a trapezoidal, bladed emerging from the curved socket section with the wider blade edge having a gentle radius, that may be the result of wear. The implement could have been mounted either in-line with the shaft, or conceivably at right angles to that shaft. It is now heavily eroded and with considerable surface fragmentation. The object/hoe was found in an area of numerous Roman and earlier finds, therefore, it may conceivably precede the Roman occupation. See NLM-B747A1 for a Roman exampl…

Undated iron tool fragment, the head from a hoe, 99mm long, 38mm wide and 38mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 95grams. It consists of a sub rectangular band with a circular section which tapers in width slightly towards a rectangular sectioned protrusion. This has a sub triangular form whose tapering edges echo the alignment of the band. About halfway down its length the object turns downwards slightly. The object tapers to a point which, when viewed from above splays out, where it would have formed a platform for the blade.
