Iron gouge, probably for woodworking. The gouge has a rectangular sectioned handle which widens out into a wider, flatter, rectangular blade with a raised stop at the end of the blade where it meets the handle. The blade gradually thins and curves with the tip being an arc of about one third of a circle. The handle is 31.1 by 28.8mm; the blade 45.9 by 15.4mm at the top and 46.8 by 4.3mm at the tip. It is 115mm long and weighs 691 grams. Iron tools are very hard to date as they often stay the same, functional shape for long periods. Surrounding finds may suggest a Roman date. Manning …

In 1984 a Founders Hoard of late Bronze Age metal work was unearthed. The Hoard consisted of eight objects. Two of the objects join together to form what could be part of a bronze bowl or caldron; however the piece could simply be a fragment of metal working debris. The Hoard consists of the following: 1) A fragment of a socketed axe SUSS-8F4D33 (found within the metal detectorists collection - it was not kept with the rest of the hoard, but is likely to be from the same find site, the detectorist is deceased). 2) Two fragments of a bronze bowl or caldron or possibly metal workin…

A copper alloy gouge. This has been cast and then the blade was probably hammered to harden it before sharpening. The artefact is incomplete, with only the blade end surviving; the socket has been lost or removed in the past. The faces are roughly sub-rectangular; it measures 45.7mm in length, 12mm in width and 9.5mm in thickness. It is loosely semicircular in cross-section. The blade edge proper is heavily corroded and worn. The original surface has virtually all been eroded away. The surface is rough, with a light greyish-green colour, and brown patches. This artefact probably …

The artefact is incomplete, with only the blade end surviving; the socket has been lost or removed in the past. The faces are roughly sub-rectangular; at the top it is 14.7mm wide, widening to 15.34mm at the blade; the tool has a wedge shape when seen from the side. It is loosely semicircular in cross-section. The blade edge is rounded rather than straight. There is a hollow in the other end, which would have been the base of the original socket. The original surface has v…
