Fragment of a dark blue glass melon bead of Roman date (50-200 AD). The bead has been broken, only this fragment survives; it is irregular in plan and cross section. Originally it would probably have been sub-oval shape in plan with a central hole. The central hole is ridged by vertical striations and has an internal diameter of 11.4mm. The outer edge of the bead has regular lentoid shaped ridges formed by regular grooves like depressions. The bead has been broken relatively recently as the edges are crisp and unabraded; the matrix of the glass shows frequent small bubbles. There are …

Glass working waste. A melted drop of bright cobalt blue translucent glass, of teardrop form broken off at a narrow trail, and with an uneven surface on opposed sides perhaps arising from its being gripped by tongs. The surface is entirely without iridescence, which points to a recipe using soda rather than potash, of Roman to Early Medieval date, while there is scant indication of bubbles trapped in the metal. The reduction of glass to an entirely fluid state is unlikely to have come about by accident. Beads of this tint were favoured from the Late Iron Age to the end of the Viking p…

Glass working waste. A rounded shiny pebble, but too light in weight to be stone, and of a mottled off-white to greenish specked hue. A pair of spurs which are broken are opaque, but the object also has a rough patch of colourless metal [i.e. glass] attached. This is spillage from glass working; the temperatures required to reduce glass to an entirely fluid state being unlikely to arise accidentally. The lack of iridescence may suggest a soda glass recipe rather than one using potash, which is a trait of Roman and Early Medieval glasses. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1000. Length: 22…

Two pieces of Post Medieval molten glass. The larger sub rectangular piece is transluscent pale blue/green and smaller sub triangular piece is opaque pale blue/green. These two artefacts are almost glass working debris as there are traces of cutting by pincers and remnants of sprues. Probably date from between c1500 and c1745 AD. The latter half of this period saw glass making becoming more dependant on coal as opposed to wood. The larger piece measures length 36mm, width 15mm, thickness 4.5mm, mass 3.7g and the smaller length 14mm, width 11mm, thickness 5mm, mass 0.9g. They wer…

A fragment of glass slag of unknown date but may be Post-Medieval to Modern (about 1500-1900). This is waste material from glass working. Much of the surface is smooth with visible impurities. The rest is black and "blobby" where the liquid material has solidified in drops and layers after having been melted; parts of this billowed material are shiny.

Glass, White (i.e. clear); one fragment colourless, three of turquoise tint Four fragments of Cullet or glass-working waste. The colourless fragment is a bubble-free sphere with a scar from its detaching with pincers, weight: 5.69gms; the other three fragments are a blob of spillage, weighing 4.01gms, and two runnels of spillage, weight: 2.01gms. The lack of iridescence may suggest the glass to be soda glass of Roman or Early Medieval date - the latter being a period when Roman recipes were used. However, the objects are not accompanied by Roman finds. Suggested date: Early Medieval…
