A Roman folding knife handle. The handle is made of a moulded copper alloy sheet folded over itself but not quite flat leaving two edges slightly open. In its folded state it is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section depicting a stylised hound chasing a hare. At the blade end there is a rectangular panel with moulded transverse ribs at either end both of which have incised lines running across them to form a double collar. The blade would have been attatched to this area through a corroded iron rivet, still in situ. Further iron corrosion is visible in the remains of…

A copper alloy folding knife dating to the Roman period (2nd to 4th century AD). The handle of the knife is in the shape of an animal, probably a lion, with a clawed foot at the terminal and a head at the blade-end of the handle. The head has well moulded features, including a rounded snout with a closed mouth, pointed-oval ears, eyes, and a beard extending from the chin. From the back of the head a hinge mechanism extends for rotating the blade. The hound is stylised in appearance with an arched back, front legs lifted and head pointing forwards, in line with the body and tail, all giving the appearance of running. The hound's rear legs are curved in a lifelike manner, although one rear leg has been partially truncated due to an old break. The hound's tail is also partially truncated, as though it has been docked, aga…

At the lower corner of the broad end of the handle is a broken axial hole for the spindle, the blade has been lost. The handle is cast in the form of a stylised or degraded, sinuous zoomorphic figure, which is consistent with a form of feline representation, usually described as a panther or lion, seen in other examples (see below). The mid part of the handle has a moulded waist with collars which may represent an architectural element such as a column as seen on comparable examples such as BH-92AF3B. The lower portion of the handle is curled into a loop, possibly for suspension. The top of the…

A fragment probably from a cast copper-alloy Roman folding knife handle, dating from AD 43 - 410. The fragment appears to depict a dog or hound (or perhaps a hare) and is three dimensional. The animal has its snout raised, and the forlegs are bent. The back legs are not very well defined, being a semi-circular projecting lug really, but this may be part of the pivot for the knife blade, or part of the slot for the bade to fold into, now all obscured by corrosion. A projection backwards is incomplete. Length 29.6mm, width is 16.3mm, thickness 7.0mm, weight 5.1g It is likely that thi…

An cast cast copper-alloy zoomorphic possible folding knife handle dating to the Roman period, c. 43-410 AD. The object survives virtually complete, though its attribution as a folding knife handle is problematic due to the fact that there is no slot within the handle itself for the knife blade to fold into, as is the usual with most other objects of this type. The object has a flattened rectangular-sectioned basal element, above which are rendered a rather stylised three-dimensional rendition of a hound chasing a hare, the hare having been apparently caught by the tail in this instan…

An incomplete bone folding-knife handle in the form of a stylised male figure, perhaps a gladiator dating from AD 100-300. The figure is missing the lower legs and iron blade. The groove for accommodating the blade is cut through the side of the head and front of the shield. A shallow longitudinal groove which runs down the figure's back may be an abandoned attempt to house the blade in a more conventional position or may simply indicate the figure's physique. The head, turned left, is disproportionately large and modelled in detail. Beneath the flat and furrowed(?) temple the eye soc…
