A complete cast copper-alloy dodecahedron dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). Type 1b. This object was discovered during a controlled archaeological investigation by a local History and Archaeology Group and Allen Archaeology and was recovered from a pit described by the excavators as a quarry infilled with debris as a midden. Other finds include a box-flue tile fragment, grey-ware pottery, roof tile debris and animal teeth. Photographs and information were kindly provided by Lorena Hitchens who is currently undertaking a PhD on the topic…

A broken and damaged cast copper-alloy dodecahedron dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The hollow object would have had twelve flat faces and raised sub-spherical knobs at each corner. Each face is equally sized, and has a circular knop in the centre which varies in diameter, the smallest being 4.8mm and the largest 9mm. All of the apertures have slightly bevelled rounded edges and are surrounded by lines of adjoining pellets. Overall diameter: 40mm, Thicknes: 2.26mm, weight 25.2gms Dodecahedrons are uncommon finds with a limited distribution in Britain and other parts of…

A slightly damaged but otherwise complete cast copper-alloy dodecahedron dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The hollow object has twelve flat faces and raised sub-spherical knobs at each corner, totalling 20. Each face is equally sized, is smoothed and has a circular perforation in the centre which varies in diameter, the smallest being 13.7mm and the largest 20mm. All of the apertures have slightly bevelled rounded edges and are surrounded by a faint double-lined circumferential boarder. All of the projecting knobs are triangular in cross-section at the base and expand into t…

A fragment of Roman (AD 43-410) copper alloy dodecahedron, consisting of two complete faces and the remains of a further six (at the most, circa half of an individual face remains). All breaks are old. Each pentagonal face would have had a projecting knop on each 'corner'; only five of these survive around the two complete surviving faces. The two complete surviving faces adjoin each other. At the centre of each is a perforation 10-11mm in diameter. The hole has a raised rim and the area around is sunken and circular in shape within the pentagonal face. A raised ring sits in the sunk…

A fragment of a copper alloy dodecahedron dating to the Roman period (AD 43 - AD 410). In their full form, dodecahedrons are hollow, twelve-sided objects. This fragment consists of one complete edge with two spherical lugs in each corner. Each face of the dodecahedron would have contained a circular hole, and the edges of three circles are visible on this fragment. Surrounding two of these is a double incised border, which presumably forms two concentric rings around the holes. The reverse is hollow and undecorated. The metal is worn and mid green in colour. The fragment is 29.5…

A copper alloy fragment of a possible dodecahedron. Complete examples would be twelve sided hallow cast objects that would have a large spherical knop on each corner and as hole of varying size on each face. This example is only one corner of such an object and consists of one large globular knop with a short section of the corner projecting from either side, a small portion down on two sides. The underside of the object is concave and crudely finished off while the outside is relatively smooth Copper alloy dodecahedrons are uncommon finds and appear restricted to the northern part…

A copper alloy fragment of a Roman (AD c.100-300) dodecahedron, comprising of one complete edge, two cylindrical lugs (one at each corner) and short sections of four other edges. Overall, the fragment measures 37.65mm in length (34.30mm not including the lugs), 26.15mm in width and 21.05mm thick (9.55mm not including the lugs). It weighs 27.13g. Each face of the dodecahedron would have contained a circular hole, each of a different size. The edges of three of these circles are recogniseable at the sides of this fragment. The cylindrical lugs are of similar sizes, 13.05mm and 12.40mm i…

Two fragments of a cast copper alloy hollow dodecahedron of Roman date; the fragments join at one point only although it is not precisely clear which of the two breaks is the original join. The two fragments form most of one pentagonal face and parts of the five adjacent faces. At each of the four surviving corners is a large spherical projection, each about 13.5mm in diameter. The complete face is pierced by a circular hole c15.75 in diameter and the edges of three further holes are also visible on three of the extant sides. The interior is left roughcast. there is no additional deco…

An incomplete cast copper alloy dodecahedron. The twelve-sided object is hollow (crudely cast on the interior) with flat faces and knobs at each corner. One knop has broken off and is loose. Six complete faces survive, while half of a further five faces are visible. Large circular holes of different sizes are pierced through each face, these are irregularly cut. Some of the holes have been drawn around with an incised pentagonal line. The broken edges are rough and crude. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour. Approximate width of each face: 42mm, approximate length of each face: 3…
