An incomplete ceramic hand made crucible.
Description: The crucible is missing at least its upper section if not its middle section also. It has relatively straight sides narrowing to a very thick bottom. Where visible and not covered by concretion, a vitreous later or adhering metallic slag the fabric is very porous and rough, with various small inclusions. Much of the surface has been heated so intensely that part of the inside and outside have vitrified. The metallic elements adhering to its inside were show by p-XRF to be mostly lead with some arsenic, iron and tin.

A Medieval - Post Medieval ceramic fragment of a crucible. Hazel Forysth notes this is a crucible for metal working or it may be alchemical. It would have been for a light element, possibly mercury as the crucible is fairly light for its size and the material has seeped through into the fabric. It can be clearly seen as a highly reflective metallic layer. The surviving section of this crucible includes the spout and possibly part of a side lug.
Dimensions: weight: 561g.

Probably medieval flat basal sherd of a ceramic crucible in a dense, hard, sandy, pale grey fabric. About half of the base is extant. On the interior face near the edge (but not in the centre) and extending up the wall is a deposit of solidified bubbly silver coloured metal, which (in the absence of metallurgicsl analysis) is probably silver. The remainder of the inner surface is dark grey and at one point this colour extends over part of the fracture. Part of the outer face of the wall and the underside is covered with a thin, black, shiny deposit. On the wall there are also dull gre…

A base fragment of a Roman to medieval ceramic crucible. The fabric is red-orange with a high quantity of small to medium inclusions. The crucible is U shaped in section, with a flat base and almost vertical sides. The fragment measures 25.2mm (height) x 33.6mm (length) x 28.9mm (width) x 4.2mm (thickness) and weighs 16.56g.
The crucible was probably used in fine metalworking production; its form is functional and it could date from the Roman to medieval period (c. 43-1500 AD)

Possibly pottery body sherd. Crucible fragment. Dark grey hard reduced fabric with a bubbled and vitreous coating inside and out, markedly thicker on the outside, and on the ?lower part of the vessel wall. A vessel diameter of circa 180mm might be inferred - it remains uncertain where on the vessel wall this sherd derives from. This object is potentially important evidence for non ferrous metalworking or other high temperature processes such as glassworking, and may complement other industrial evidence from the same site. The sherd was kindly examined by Wallace Collyer of the North L…

A fragment of a ceramic vessel, probably a crucible of Post Medieval date. The fabric is hard and coarse with micacous inclusions. On the outer edge in one area is a layer of metallic material, probably tin or lead based. This is bobbly and where it has flaked off, it has left a silvery grey shiny surface.

Two fragments of a ceramic crucible. The fabric is a white ware with no obvious inclusions and is highly fired, but is still able to be scratched. The exterior appears to have fine linear grooves which may be decoration or part of the manufacturing process. On the interior of each sherd there is traces of a copper alloy adhered to it. The copper alloy has traces of red copper corrosion and has a 'bubbled' surface. The two sherds together weigh 5.5g.
The date of the sherds are uncertain, but probably date to the Medieval or Post Medieval period.

Ceramic crucible of probable later Medieval or early post medieval date (1200-1600 AD). The crucible is incomplete and been abraded by flowing water creating smooth rounded edges to the profile. In plan the crucible is irregular; originally it would have been broadly circular, now it is an irregular ellipse. In profile it is an irregular sub-rectangular shape with a relatively narrow base which expands to an open mouth. The water worn damage present has affected one edge more than the other and so diameter of the base and mouth cannot be truly estimated. The fabric is extremely hard wi…
