A complete iron possible crossbow bolt of medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1200 – 1600. The head is lozenge in section and tapers to a point at one end. The other end opens into a circular socketed shaft. The metal has a dark red/brown patina and is worn. The object is 39.2mm long, 16.1mm wide. 14.5mm thick and weighs 5.8g.

An incomplete copper alloy object, possibly a crossbow bolt (quarrel) dating to the medieval period (c.AD 1300-1600). The object consists of a socket and a solid head. The socket is round and conical in shape, it has an incomplete circular mouth. At the the tapered end of the socket is the solid bolt head which is square in section and tapers to a point. The object has a smooth light brown patina with pitting on the surface. An iron probable arrowhead or crossbow bolt ('quarrel') of medieval date, c. AD 1200-1500. The projectile has a shortened rectangular-sectioned tang, which broadens quickly into a tapering shaft. At its widest point the bolt is 11.47mm, before it narrows sharply to form the piercing point. The iron surface is now heavily corroded. Crossbow bolts are typically socketed, but other iron tanged examples on the database include DEV-C13AAB and LANCUM-EA6546. Length: 51.83mm, thickness: 8.17mm, weight: 11.70g.

A hand forged iron possible bolt head from a catapult of probable Roman date, 50 - 200 AD. The bolt is heavily corroded / encrusted and suffering badly from laminating corrosion. It is triangular in plan and varies in cross section; the shaft has an irregular oval shaped section that expands to a regular square sectioned head that tapers to a blunt point. Cast copper alloy cross bow bolt. Medieval to Post-Medieval date. 40mm long. The base is hollow and six sided, measuring 8mm in diameter. The bolt widens to 9mm in diameter before tapering to a point. A casting seam is visible along one side. Two holes, 1.5mm in diameter, are placed opposite each other at the base of the bolt. These holes allow the bolt to be fixed onto a wooden shaft. Similar can be seen on this database at LON-904322.

Iron large armour piercing crossbow square sectioned quarrel probably relating to the Battle of Towton in 1461 AD which is the find site. Crossbowmen often formed part of a kings bodyguard and were often more highly regarded than knights. The length is 65mm, width of blade 22mm, thickness is 10mm wide. A complete Medieval cast iron crossbow quarrel (bolt) (15th century). The head of the quarrel has a lozenge-shaped cross-section. Just below the head the cross-section changes to circular and expands to form the socket. The edge of the socket is damaged. Material fills the socket; it appears to be iron and may be the shaft of the quarrel. A Medieval - Post Medieval copper alloy crossbow quarrel (bolt) (15th – 16th century). Only the tip remains, it is broken across the circular-sectioned shaft. The circular cross-section changes to a cruciform cross-section and tapers to form the tip. There is a casting seam extending along the length and a maker’s mark of a trefoil just below the point.
