North Vol 2, p.137, no.2015. The coin is pierced at 11 o’clock on the obverse. Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards.

The coin is worn and appears to have once featured two sub-parallel straightened folds suggesting it may have been repurposed as a love token. Coins of William III were commonly converted into love tokens and this example has the characteristic S-shape.
