A damaged and incomplete early medieval penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (AD 796-821), portrait type (North 367; Naismith 12.1), moneyer: Wihtræd, mint: East Anglia (Ipswich?). Ref: North 1994: p.95; Naismith 2011: pl. 29, esp. E12.1c). The coin is incomplete, damage to the flan removing part of the outer circle resulting in a partial reading of the inscription. Obverse: COEN[...]REX M. Reverse: cross pattee with wedge in each angle, legend: [...]TDH+E[...].  Also recorded under EMC number : 2023.0355.

An Early Medieval silver early penny (sceat) of the Secondary Phase 'Triquestras' group (BMC type 52; Naismith Series TRd), dating to c AD720-30, mint unknown. Refs: Naismith 2017: table 4, pl. 13 nos 396-7; Gannon 2013: 118-19, pl. 515-17, especially 517. The coin is in poor condition, much of the design encrusted and corroded. However the characteristic wreath ties either side of the face are visible as is the tightly curved shoulders formed of lines and pellets. A silver penny of King Coenwulf of Mercia dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 796-821) struck by Seberht at Canterbury. The obverse depicts a legend reading COENVVLF REX arranged circumferentially around a central circle and an M (for Mercia) within it. The obverse features a Radiate bust of crude style facing right with a pyramidical neck, with Runic [ᚪᛈᚪ], APA before.
