Record ID: SWYOR-316B8E
Object type: BURIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible burin formed on a crude blade of white flint. Unknown date, Mesolithic to Bronze Age (10,000 - 1000 BC). It is unclear where the flint was struck from. The faces are uneven, and most have a stepped termination scar. One end of the blade is much narrower and thinner. One side of this projection has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch, possibly to form a burin. There appears to be a removal across the end of the spur from the retouched edge. The tool is 38.1mm long, 16.3mm wide, 8.2mm thick. 3.3g. Burins are typically mesolithic, but the reuse of a crude blade i…

A flint possible burin of unknown date, Mesolithic to Iron Age, 9000 BC - 1 BC. It is formed on a utilised natural secondary flake of flint which is light grey with some tan staining. There is cortex on one edge. The pointed end has some flaked removals leading away form the working point, perhaps to form a crude burin. It is 42mm long, 23.3mm wide nad 8.3mm thick. 7.7g.

A struck flake tool of brown flint, 44mm in length with a pronounced bulb of percussion and prepared striking platform at the proximal end. The dorsal surface has multi-directional removal scars. The distal end tapers and appears to have been slightly notched with a spall removal along one side, creating a burin point.

A triangular flint tool, probably a burin or piercer and made from a tertiary flake of dark brown flint, 39.2mm in length. The distal point appears to have a burin spall removal along one side; the other side has short abrupt scaled retouch along most of its length.

A worked piece of flint, probably a burin or possibly a borer, probably of Mesolithic date, 9000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of tan coloured flint. It is triangular in cross-section, and tapers to a point at the distal end. The right dorsal face is covered with previous removal scars. A burin spall has been removed from each side of the distal end, leaving a wide tip at right angles to the flake. The proximal left edge is also retouched with short, abrupt, scaled removals. Length: 32.87mm Width: 10.98mm Thickness: 6.28mm Weight: 2.3g

A Mesolithic burin or piercer, 43.9mm in length made from tertiary flake of dark grey-brown flint which tapers to a point. This has been worked with short scaled abrupt retouch around the base and what appears to be a burin spall removal along the curved side of the tip.

A flint flake, probably a burin, of probable Mesolithic date, 10000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a secondary flake of opaque light grey flint with cortex surviving on the left edge of the distal end. It is sub-oval in plan, with several removal scars on the dorsal face making it oval in cross-section. There is a burin spall removal from the distal end along the ventral face at the right hand side. This, and additional flaking on the distal end, create a chisel like point at the distal end which could be used for cutting grooves. It is 29mm long, 20.3mm wide and 9.5…

A flint burin dating to the Mesolithic period (c. 9000-4000 BC). The object is knapped from a patinated secondary flake. There is abrupt, sub-parallel retouch along the distal end of the dorsal face to form a clear point at the upper right hand corner. A strip of light pink cortex has been retained on the dorsal face running from the top left corner down to the proximal end. The ventral face shows a clear bulb of percussion but no retouch. The overall dimensions are as follows: 28.84mm in length, 26.05mm in width, 8.10mm in thickness and 6.49g in weight.

A probable flint burin or graver dating to the Mesolithic period (c. 9000-4000 BC). The object is knapped from a patinated tertiary flake. There is abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on both faces at the distal end to form a, now slightly rounded, point. there is also a notch carved out on the left hand edge of the ventral face formed by abrupt, parallel retouch to form a second point.  The overall dimensions are as follows: 48.84mm in length, 25.12mm in width, 7.01mm in thickness and 8.01g in weight.

A complete flint Scraper/Burin of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The object is sub-rectangular in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains six predominant negative scars and short scaled flaking along the right-hand edge. The proximal and distal edges have been blunted with the distal edge forming a projecting spur along both the left- and right-hand edges. The right- and left-hand edges have some abrupt retouch. The ventral surface predominantly flat with the exception of four shallow negative scars situated over a small partial bulb of percussion along the …
