A plain gold buckle of rectangular cross-section, comprising a hollow triangular plate and an oval loop. The buckle plate consists of a flat upper plate which is soldered to side walls, creating a box-like hollow-backed element. The apex of the triangular box expands into a circular lobe; there are also two curved projections, each slightly smaller than the apex lobe, along the long sides near to the wider end. The upper part of the buckle plate is then fixed to a sheet gold back-plate by (probably) five rivets. One rivet is placed at each of the rounded projections, one at the ape…

Description: Sub-triangular three-dimensional object made from cast silver, with all edges curved (two concave and one convex). When held with the convex edge downwards, the object is curved in cross-section from side to side; the reverse is flatter, but has a C-shaped raised area following the convex edge with a sunken C-shaped centre which is part of the original casting. Description: An incomplete gold Anglo Saxon buckle pin of unusual form. The pin is complete and curves downwards whilst tapering gently in width towards its terminal end, it is D-shaped in section, being flat underneath. The terminal end is open and flat and shows that the pin is in fact hollow and now filled with soil. In fact the pin appears to be constructed from two separate sheets of gold, a front sheet bent into a U-shape which is soldered onto a back plate. The front face of the pin has seven square cells running longitudinally along its centre, each cell very slightly smalle…

Small gold buckle consisting of an oval loop with a tongue with curved tip and a hinged, high-rectangular plate. Three rivets in form of small cabochon garnets set inside a triple frame made from a plain gold and two beaded wire collars are arranged across the plate. The middle garnet is cracked. The tongue rest shows signs of wear and the back of the plate is plain except for the three rivet stumps. The size of the buckle suggests that it may have come from a pouch or knife strap, although in the seventh century very narrow waist belts were popular as well. The buckle is of Marzi…

Gold and cloisonné garnet setting from the tongue plate of a high status buckle. The setting is sub-rectangular with curved cutaways defining the shoulders. It is made with a sheet gold back plate to which is soldered a single strip of gold sheet set on edge to form a frame for the cloisonné cell work. This is inlaid with well cut garnets over pointillé foil and fills the panel with a design of two skilfully entwined snakes: their heads with well defined open jaws fill the lower corners and their sinuous bodies interlace across the centre of the panel to end in tails tucked beneath…

Fragment of an ornamental panel from the lower end of a small triangular buckle plate. The gold foil sheet is torn and slightly crumpled and carries the remains of interlacing elements, probably stylised zoomorphs, in fine beaded wire between beaded wire borders. The triple banded design of the zoomorphs is executed typically using wire of two weights B a thicker central wire flanked on either side by thinner wire. The filigree wire is soldered to a thin gold sheet worked in repousse with the underlying pattern. Triangular buckles come into use in the last quarter of the 6th century,…
