An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle with an integral place dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The pin and plate are missing, with only the frame intact. It is 'D' shaped in plan, with a recessed pin rest on the front edge of the frame and an offset strap bar with pin constriction on the opposing side, directly in front of where the original integral plate would have been sited. Preserved in fair condition with an even greyish green patina, it measures 22.12mm long, 29.08mm wide at its widest point, and 3.23mm thick at the midpoint of the frame. It weighs 4.25g. A similar…

Copper alloy possible buckle plate. A thick cast straight-sided plate with a narrowed projecting slotted rectangular tab which is folded tightly against the back of the larger part. Moulded vertical bars appear at the inner and outer edges of the display side of the plate, and a pair of spurs project from its putative inner end. This configuration would more normally be rendered in flexible sheet metal, and this may be a slotted and bent hasp rather than the buckle plate which its form superficially resembles. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length: 21.5mm, Height: 20.2mm, T…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast oval buckle with markedly bevelled edges and opposed housings for a separate steel spindle [lost]. The frame bears a series of equidistantly spaced crescents stamped around its circumference, with lightly defined cabled borders along the inner and outer edges of the frame. A zone of dots in lines between a pair of crescents may be the relict of a more extensive scheme lost to heavy wear. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1660-1720.
