An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman bow and fantail brooch, date ing from about AD 75 - 175. It fits into Mackreth (2011) Trumpet derivative, Hinged Type 4.1bx (page 127, plate 86). The brooch is now folded over so that the foot touches the head. It has a large triangular fantail foot mostly filled with opaque brick red enamel. An incomplete copper-alloy headstud brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 200. Mackreth 2011, Hinged Headstud Type, no direct parallel.
The head of the brooch comprises tubular wings which act as a double lug hinge mechanism. An axis bar remains fitted through the lug though is broken and worn to either end and from the central slot. The pin no longer remains.

The frame is decorated with continuous transverse incised bands or ridges on the front surface, some of which are inlaid with a darker material, possibly niello. Copper alloy disc brooch. A large plain disc with the stub of a small integrally cast loop at its edge; the loop coincides with the position of long paired U-shaped lugs on the back which retained a hinged pin; the stub of a small catch plate lies at the opposite edge of the plate. The brooch is flat with a narrow D-shaped section and is in the form of a bird, possibly a cockerel, facing left.
Faint moulded lines decorate the upper surface denoting a hooked beak, small crest above the head, a pointed wing extending up and backwards from the shoulder of the bird and a thick curved tail from the back end. A small, rectangular projecting plate to the bottom of the brooch represents the feet of the bird.

The brooch is circular with worn edges. The upper surface has a white-metal coating displaying file marks and is otherwise undecorated.
The remains of a hinge mechanism and catchplate are present at opposing points of the reverse which is otherwise flat. The pin no longer remains.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 23.4mm in diameter, 6mm thick (with hinge), 1.4mm thick at the plate and weighs 3.8g.
