Iron brooch. Wrought iron T shaped bow brooch with possibly thickened or decorated ends to its wings, possibly one of the Colchester derivative family. The bow has an apparently angular section, though this is almost certainly the result of the fractured loss of corrosion products. Three detached fragments of rust in the bag indicate the process of deterioration has continued apace since the discovery of the brooch. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-125. Length: 39.8mm, Width: 26mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 9.9mm, Weight: 13.34gms

A complete but corroded iron 'P-shaped' brooch dating to the Roman period. The brooch has a curved bow with distinct 'P' shaped profile, with a returning foot that forms the catchplate. From the tip of the catchplate a thin rod of iron extends across to the bow and loops around it c. two times. At the head of the brooch the bow narrows into a rod and forms the spring by looping back over the arms and wrapping around them multiple times and is secured under the bow with a large loop. This creates tension for the pin, which is formed from the end of the spring rod. The spring section …

A complete iron Roman brooch of P-shaped type. At the head of the brooch is a separately cast iron axis bar, which has globular terminals and is held in place by the flattened head of the bow being folded around the axis bar. A separately iron spring chord and spring of at least four coils are coiled around the axis bar. To one side of the spring coils is a separate iron pin that is cylindrical in form, perhaps missing its tip due to old breaks, and coiled around the axis bar. This suggests the originaly pin may have broken, the surviving pin a replacement to enable the brooch to cont…

An iron and copper-alloy artefact, possibly representing part of a Late Iron Age to Early Roman 'Birdlip' type brooch. The main portion of the artefact is of iron, with a bow-shaped copper-alloy moulding having been sleeved on to this and located one third of the way along its length. The lower two thirds of the iron portion has a flat upper surface and straight sides which converge to point. An incised pattern of herringbone decoration extends the length of this upper surface, surviving most clearly at the top. A right-angled projection is located on the underside of this portion.…
