A cast copper possible Roman terret ring fragment. It is short and curved with a circular section, and swells at the centre to a globular form with a short, incomplete projection on one side. The arms to either side of the centre have two grooves and ridges before both expand into smaller, round knobs. Both are then incomplete due to old breaks. The metalwork is worn. The object measures 34.77mm in length, 15.88mm in width, and the arms are between 6.7mm and 9mm in thickness. It weighs 15.9g. This fragment may be part of a knobbed terret of 1st to 2nd century date, although the proj…

Copper alloy and iron probable bridle fitting or cheek piece. Cast copper alloy terminal sheathing a corroded iron object. A ball terminal is separated from a round shank by two deep grooves. Below these, the copper alloy sheath is indented or split; its further extent is masked by ferrous corrosion. The object has a vaguely phallic appearance, possibly the fortuitous result of its partial survival. The sheathing of iron horse gear with copper alloy, for both decoration and to retard corrosion of the iron elements, is known from later Iron Age contexts and continued into the Roman per…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper-alloy circular bridle boss. The boss is a hollow hemisphere, with an openwork design and a flat border around the edge. A break to one side has removed part of the border and one of the pair of rivet holes. The boss has a raised central knop, around which is the openwork main body, consisting of slim curving arms. The less worn arms are decorated with a scale like patten of raised semi-circles running down each arm and incised lines down their inner sides which continue at the base to meet the base of the next arm. Around this is a narrow rop…

Incomplete copper alloy Post-Medieval openwork bridle boss. The object is sub-circular in shape. It has a raised, circular, openwork boss in the centre, which is concave to the reverse and is formed from a fleur de lis with a rope work border around its base. Beyond this there is a flat section, decorated with a raised design, probably foliate, but which has become obscured due to erosion. There are two attachment holes through this section, equidistant to one another, but they have both become damaged and the metal around them has broken away leaving only two notches. Probably of 17t…

Incomplete cast lead bridle boss, circular in plan, with a shallow hollow central dome, decorated with an incised star pattern and defined by a beaded circle on the recessed edge of the base. Surrounding the some is a border of moulded foliage, made up of leaves surrounding lozenge-shaped rosettes, alternating with three-leafed clovers. The boss might have been mounted on the leather blinker on a horse's bridle. There are stains from iron attachments on the back of the boss, but the area where part of the boss has been torn away may have held one of the attachments, which was ripped o…

Lead alloy decorative bridle boss, probably 17th or 18th century. The object consists of a cast circular boss, decorated both around the rim and substantial portion of the inner area with a floral pattern. The centre circular section of the boss appears to have no decoration. The reverse of the boss shows the remains of the two attachment points with part of the rusted iron fixing point still in evidence on one of the two. It is probable that all or at least the centre section of this item would have been 'silvered'.
