Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast one-piece T-shaped moulded fitting comprising a ring of three annular components with a longitudinal aperture of diameter 12.7mm, differentially heavily worn at one side of one end, and with an integrally cast lug of two bun-shaped parts of diminishing size set at right angles to the channel. Fresh corrosion at the flat end of the smaller bun may suggest another component or a decorative feature has been lost. Damage or a casting flaw appears on that side of the object opposite the two-staged lug. The finder kindly suggests a functional conne…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-977F74. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been partly concealed by its explosive corrosion. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 30mm long which appears to have been integrally cast with the sheathed band probably concealed further iron and now has an open end of diameter 7.7mm with very corroded iron within. The pear-shaped housing is now set at an angle to the rest of the band. These objects are familiar from the ‘chario…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-97F082. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing of a concavo-convex or U-section copper alloy strip – possibly the relict of a copper alloy sheath which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been lost to its explosive corrosion. A glossy patch shows where the crumbling iron has been consolidated with glue by the finder, and its extent now seems excessive compared to its surviving sheathing. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 32mm long which appears to have been integral…

Copper alloy chain fragment; Tom Redmayne kindly comments: '...I would say this is a fragment of a curb chain from heavy horse harness. I have had several examples, some still attached to other parts of the head collar/bit..'. A series of seven oval drawn wire links, each of length 9.5mm and thickness 1.8mm and each twisted with a butted and brazed join and passed through its identical neighbour. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Length: 46mm, Width: 8mm

Copper alloy possible bridle fitting. Cast ring of rounded section with an integrally cast projection of oval section which projects at an angle from the side of the ring, now broken, and possibly leading towards a second loop. The ring is thinned by internal wear approximately opposite the lug. The metal has a reddish tint often associated with metalwork of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100. Diameter: 27.8mm, Length (as found): 31.3mm, Band Width: 3.3mm, Band Thickness: 3.2mm, Weight: 7.16gms

Copper alloy and iron possible bridle fitting. Tubular object of copper alloy sheet of thickness 0.6mm with a butted seam, a flat closed end and a flared open end, which is torn. Three circumferential grooves are set towards the flat closed end. Rust suggests the copper alloy sheet sheaths an iron object whose corrosion has begun to explode the object. Suggested date: Medieval, 1100-1350. Length: 57.4mm, Diameter (at mid point): 8.6mm, Weight: 14.07gms.

Copper alloy bridle fitting fragment. Cast object of plano-convex section with a rhomboid loop at one end with low knops on its external angles and a probably drilled aperture of diameter 10mm, and with a moulded stem which diminishes in its thickness towards the broken stubs of another loop. The back surface of the loop appears lightly countersunk, probably as a result of wear. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050. Length: 46.8mm, Width: 21.2mm, Thickness: 5.9mm, Weight: 12.00gms.

Copper alloy and iron probable bridle fitting or cheek piece. Cast copper alloy terminal sheathing a corroded iron object. A ball terminal is separated from a round shank by two deep grooves. Below these, the copper alloy sheath is indented or split; its further extent is masked by ferrous corrosion. The object has a vaguely phallic appearance, possibly the fortuitous result of its partial survival. The sheathing of iron horse gear with copper alloy, for both decoration and to retard corrosion of the iron elements, is known from later Iron Age contexts and continued into the Roman per…

Copper alloy and iron possible bridle link. Cast copper alloy ring of round section with an apparent elongation on one side meeting a dumbbell shaped mass of solid ferrous corrosion of length 37mm. It is suggested these represent two adjacent pieces of horse harness. A ring of Late Iron Age date was reported together with this object. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100BC-AD100. Diameter (ring): 25.4mm, Width (ring band): 6.9mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Length (overall): 47.6mm, Weight: 42.54gms.
