Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast one-piece T-shaped moulded fitting comprising a ring of three annular components with a longitudinal aperture of diameter 12.7mm, differentially heavily worn at one side of one end, and with an integrally cast lug of two bun-shaped parts of diminishing size set at right angles to the channel. Fresh corrosion at the flat end of the smaller bun may suggest another component or a decorative feature has been lost. Damage or a casting flaw appears on that side of the object opposite the two-staged lug. The finder kindly suggests a functional conne…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-977F74. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been partly concealed by its explosive corrosion. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 30mm long which appears to have been integrally cast with the sheathed band probably concealed further iron and now has an open end of diameter 7.7mm with very corroded iron within. The pear-shaped housing is now set at an angle to the rest of the band. These objects are familiar from the ‘chario…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-97F082. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing of a concavo-convex or U-section copper alloy strip – possibly the relict of a copper alloy sheath which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been lost to its explosive corrosion. A glossy patch shows where the crumbling iron has been consolidated with glue by the finder, and its extent now seems excessive compared to its surviving sheathing. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 32mm long which appears to have been integral…

Copper alloy and iron bridle fitting. Cast circular or wheel-shaped openwork plate, featuring a triple or triskele arrangement of loops, each bounded by a comma-shaped and a sub-triangular space, all bounded by a plain rounded rim. An iron pin passed at right angles through the centre of the plate, and its continuation is represented by a rusted stub of diameter 9.7mm which appears to have exploded an integrally cast lug, sleeve or socket projecting from one side. Incised decoration on the display side, opposite the protruding lug or collar, comprises incised lines following those of …

Copper alloy and iron probable bridle fitting. A massy tubular copper alloy bar of round section and diameter 11.8mm with a pair of symmetrically disposed expanded flanges which pass all around it, both set c.16mm from its ends. The ends of the copper alloy tube are bevelled or worn to rounded form. Ferrous corrosion and the mass of the object both suggest there is an internal iron rod or stiffener of diameter 8.5mm, which has yet to cause any damage to its external sheathing through its expansion as it rusts. The combination of metals for decorative and functional reasons is typical …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Iron Age bridle fitting or strap union c.50 BC - AD 120
Description: The object is flat and in plan is formed by two double ended geometric 's-scrolls' back to. These two 'S-scrolls' are wider at the middle, where they meet. Each 'S-scroll' arm finishes smaller inwards facing curl, although only one remains mostly intact. At the widest points of each 'S-scroll' is a circular cell that has a central hole through it. These cells likely contained either red enamel (possibly red and yellow chequerboard) or red coral, now missing. The object arms are…

Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy enamel inlaid bridle fitting, a cheekpiece, toggle or "slider". A round-sectioned bar which expands to flat terminals and at the centre swells around an oval aperture. At the centre on one face there is a row of rectangular cells, the central one of which retains some red enamel. Enamel has been lost from the other two. Near one end an elogated and slightly curving cell is filled with white enamel. On one terminal an off-centre round cell contains dull pinkish inlay. Cf. Copper alloy and iron possible bridle link. Cast copper alloy ring of round section with an apparent elongation on one side meeting a dumbbell shaped mass of solid ferrous corrosion of length 37mm. It is suggested these represent two adjacent pieces of horse harness. A ring of Late Iron Age date was reported together with this object. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100BC-AD100.
Diameter (ring): 25.4mm, Width (ring band): 6.9mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Length (overall): 47.6mm, Weight: 42.54gms.

A copper alloy Late Iron Age or Early Roman probable bridle fitting fragment. The object is curvilinear, and if held in one direction, appears to be zoomorphic in design, with two curved and drooping ears above two bulging, rounded eye sockets. Both 'ears' are incomplete due to old breaks. Part of the nose or muzzle is suggested by two outward curving semi-circles, both of which are worn, the one to the left more so than on the right. The eyes sockets are deep-set for c.4mm, with an inner circle of 3.2mm and outer of 5.9mm. They may once have contained enamel, but no trace remains. …

Late Iron Age to Early Roman cheek ring or side ring from a derivative three-link bridle bit (Spratling, Group II), probably of mid 1st century to mid 2nd century AD date. The cheek ring is complete and has an overall length of 71.9mm and weighs 104.0g. The loop at the apex of the ring has an internal diameter of 6-9mm and is of sub-rectangular section. At the head of the loop is an irregular malformed trumpet moulding on one side only, but appears to be conjoined to the other side of the loop at the top, and may be miscast. It is likely that the bridle link and ring were cast onto eac…

Copper alloy horse fitting, possibly iron age in date. There is a square supension loop, which leads ot a circular plate, which is flat on both sides with curved rounded edges. On the other side of the plate is a fixed oval plate, of smaller dimensions, and with curved edges which give it a convex apperance. The object itself looks to have been cast in two pieces. With a browny green patina.
