A Post Medieval cowry or cowrie shell probably dating to the 18th century. Cowrie shells were used as form of currency in West Africa during the 17th-18th century. Pallaver writes "The price of enslaved people was quoted in cowries, and this constantly increased throughout the period of the transatlantic slave trade, especially during its peak in the 18th century. Enslaved people were often sold many times before reaching the coast and being sold to Europeans. In the 1710s, the price for an enslaved person might have started at 172 cowrie shells in the interio…

The fusion of a radius to the ulna must suggest an adult animal is represented, and the finder kindly opines that these possibly articulated bones might suggest an animal burial – they certainly appear to be of matching size and condition. There are no unequivocal cut-marks across the l…

An incomplete Horn fragment of Early-Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 410-1800). The object is a section from a probably bovid horn, which has an irregular break at both ends, with a partial linear cut through one. There is a deep linear groove in one side of the object which with the partial cut through one of the ends suggest it was utilised rather than being a natural loss. The object could be from butchery but also could be from the production of objects such as horn lamps (See https://www.reading.ac.uk/merl/interface/schools/windmill/home/home_light/home_light_2.html) …

Animal bone. Four large bone fragments. Two lower jaw bones weighing c.370gms and 190gms, a fragment from a socketed pelvic bone weighing c.125gms, and a vertebra weighing 75gms. All are from large mammals, perhaps horse or cow. From the Humber Bank, an area recently producing both human bone from Iron Age or Roman burials and pottery, probably settlement debris. These animal bone fragments are also probably from food or butchery waste. Cursory inspection does not, however, reveal cut-marks or evidence for butchery. Finds dating between the later Iron Age and the Medieval period have …

Prehistoric antler from either a large Cervus species, or an Elk (Alces alces). The antler's bud measures 65mm x 65mm, and does not appear large enough to be from an Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus). The breaks on the antler have occurred post deposition. There are no blade marks on the antler so it may have died of natural causes. There are few signs of abrasion so it is unlikely to have moved far from its original deposition site. Dates between 10,000 and 1,900 BC. There doesn't appear to have been any significant mineralisation of the organic material s…

Part of a cattle bone of uncertain date, but probably not Modern. It is part of a bovine tibia (Jane Richardson, pers comm). The bone shows signs of rodent gnawing in the form of short scratches which are about 9mm long and closely spaced, arranged in small groups. These have made the ends of the bone taper. The bone is 129mm long, 44.3mm wide and 33.7mm thick. It weighs 153.38g. The bone is not fresh, and has weathered to a dark brown colour, especially where it has been gnawed. Only the hard outer bone survives, with the inside being hollow.
