Post Medieval yellow metal or gold finger ring, There is no distinct bezel. The loop consists of two interlacing bands decorated with a stiff leaf foliage, probably acanthus, holding pellets in voids between the bands where the interlacing produces these. The pellets stand proud of the rest of the loop. The decoration is typical Rococo (post 1730s) but the twisted cable form appears earlier. No assay or makers marks reported and they would be unlikely to be worn away as the ring isn’t demonstrating much wear. Acanthus decoration was also popular in the early nineteenth century follo…

Dimensions: Length: 15 mm Width: 14 mm Thickness: 2.5 mm Diameter: 26.5 mm Weight: 10.64 g Discussion: The pitting on surface is odd, and raises the potential that this ring has been cast. It is certainly worn and this makes it difficult to be absolutely sure that it is not of more recent manufacture but on balance it is probably a standard late 16th early 17th Century type. Analysis showed that the ring was mercury gilded …
