An ornamental link from a necklace, bracelet or earring? Made of rectangular section gold wire, a teardrop shape outline contains four pieces forming curvilinear shapes and has a small loop (both showing signs of wear) at each end. Length 18 mm, wires 0.8 by 0.3mm. The craftsmanship is poor for precious metal work. Reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Catherine Johns (British Museum) adds in her report: "A single decorative gold necklace link formed out of square-sectioned wire, which would have formed a spacer between glass or hardstone beads. Date: 1st to mid 3rd century AD". X-ray…

One end of a gold penannular 'tress-ring'. 10 mm wide and 0.6 mm thick, the surviving length is 19 mm long and weight is 1.09g. The exterior face has a raised rounded border on its three original sides, surrounding nine longitudinal ribs separated by ten rounded concave grooves to give an evenly corrugated effect. Some of the grooves have longitudinal scratches which may be from the mould or from later finishing. The interior face is flat apart from a slight ridge at the original short edge, which may be a result of gentle hammering or, more probably, a reflection of the original moul…

Medieval gold finger-ring set with a garnet. The hoop is of very slender proportions - 0.7 x 0.6 mm - but, remarkably, intact and still nearly circular (c. 18-19 mm diameter). The hoop runs right up, without any shoulders, to a conical setting flaring out to accommodate a slightly irregular oval garnet (5.7 x 5.3 mm measured across the claws). This is cut flat across with very narrowly bevelled edges, and is held in place by four simple triangular claws. 12th to 14th century.

Gold posy ring, inscribed 'remember mee'. There are traces of black enamel left in the inscription. It is a very charming piece being so small in size, but as it is otherwise plain and bears no assay marks, it is very difficult to date with any accuracy. There is certainly no evidence to date it pre-1700, and it is most likely to be 18th century. It does not therefore fall within the Treasure remit.

Small, roughly hemispherical, gold droplet with rounded upper surface and flattish lumpy reverse. The surface is pitted all over. The diameter varies from c. 6 to c. 7 mm and the thickness is c. 4 mm at most. This droplet is undatable; although there is no particular reason to believe that it is over 300 years old, an ancient origin is possible and so it has been recorded.

Circular sheet of gold with a projection to one side decorated with four longitudinal grooves. Opposite the projection the sheet appears to have punchmarks or crimping around part of the circumference. There are quite a few accidental indentations which have all been made from the undecorated face, leaving bumps on the decorated face. I suspect that this object may be the back plate from a cabochon pendant, perhaps at an early stage of manufacture or perhaps never made well and later damaged. If I am right, the 'crimping' around the circumference would be to hold a beaded wire border …

Neither terminal looks broken - thus object is complete. Ribbon is extremely tangled, but it would seem that intermediate narrowing is roughly central. The 'bar' thus created is currently tightly curved but may not have originally been so. Terminal 2 has flat section leading straight out of ribbon; no.1 is more rectangular and involves a half twist, its faces having sprung from the sides of the ribbon! No real sign of original twisting of ribbon - despite the extensive buckling there seems to be no 'extra-length' along the edges relative to the centre-line. Probably a bracelet, given …

Gold and garnet fragment, possibly half of a rather long biconical bead. A hollow cone in shape, it has a circumferential band of cloisonne garnets around both the wider and the narrower end, and four longitudinal bands of cloisonne garnets running between. The band around the wider end had perhaps eight rectangular garnets originally, set in cloisons (cells); three survive now and two of the cloisons are badly crushed. A strip of gold projecting from the edge of this crushed area may be part of the attachment to the other half of the bead, or part of a suspension loop if the object …
