Description: An incomplete gold pendant dating to the early Anglo-Saxon period. It is rectangular in form, comprising a gold sheet back-plate to which has been soldered an outer border of four strands of gold wire, the outer strands beaded and the inner strands twisted alternately, creating a herringbone effect. Inside of this is a rectangular cell made from upright strips of gold sheet. The central setting is missing. The back of the pendant is plain. It is fairly crumpled. Treasure Case 2009 T395: Early Medieval artefact - possibly a pendant Object Date: late 6th to 7th century Description: pendant (possibly) Torn gold disc, missing large portions. Decorated with fine filigree in geometric arrangements centred around a round setting containing a small, cracked, amber setting. Discussion: The original function of the object is unclear, but it is likely to be a pendant. There are no traces of an attachment loop, but a decorative filigree sling on the front is reminiscent of the type of ornament that often surrounds the loop attachment. The back …

A Roman gold phallic pendant. The pendant has a substantial grooved suspension loop and a detailed representation of the male organ with testicles and erect penis, the latter with glans penis and urethra. In the hollow between the testicles there is faint evidence of pubic hair. Unusually the shaft of the penis bends downwards (rather than straight or even upwards) and is decorated on both sides with a series of diagonal grooves along almost its entire length. The pendant appears to have been cast with the suspension loop open as a flat strip. The goldsmith finished the object by clos…
