Now flattened and squashed, the piece is comprised of a cylindrical piece of sheet metal folded in on itself multiple times. The join is overlapping rather than soldered. A complete, but folded, sheet gold basket-shaped ornament of Bronze Age date (2500-2200 BC). The object is composed of a single, oval sheet of gold, rolled into a cylinder. There is an integral, flat, sub-rectangular tang projecting from the centre of one long edge which appears to be truncated. In use, the object would have been a tube, but this example has been further folded. Both ends have been folded towards the middle, and the tube has been flattened, making the ornament now sub-rectangular. There is a crease visible about 2mm from the edge of the sheet all the way round, like a …

A complete and unfolded Copper Age basket ornament dated to 2500-2200BC. This item, possibly hair ornaments or ear rings, has been cut from thin gold sheet and would normally have been wrapped into a cylindrical 'basket' shape. This example has been flattened out and shows the full extent of the oval plate which is 38mm long and 16mm wide with semi-circular ends and long straight sides. The interior of the plate is decorated with two concentric lines that run around the outside, inside of this are four zones of about five to six vertical lines running perpendicular to the long edges. …

A long, rectangular strip of sheet gold with one terminal having rounded corners and the other terminal has angular corners. The sheet is coiled forming an irregular tube of three coils. Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis undertaken at the British Museum indicated a surface composition of approximately 90-92% gold, 7-9% silver, the rest being copper (see appended report). Dimensions: 20.50mm long, 9.67mm thick, 9.2mm wide and weighs 3.49g. The sheet is 0.56mm thick. Discussion: This artefact is similar to that reported as Treasure from Essex,…

A rolled-up strip of gold of probable Chalcolithic or Bronze Age date (c. 2500-800 BC). The strip of gold is sub-rectangular in plan, and is rolled up (width ways), forming a tight roll which has been slightly squashed into an oval shape (when viewed from the side). Eleven folds can be counted from the middle. There is some soil still attached to and within these folds. The strip is very thin (less than a diameter). The strip is wider in the middle than near the end, where it tapers from c. 21 mm in the middle towards 15 mm at the end (the end hidden in the folds in the centre of the …

TREASURE CASE 2015 T460 Description: A fragment of gold foil, incomplete, bent and with a corregated appearance. No decoration visible. Possibly originally oval in plan. There is a hole through the sheet near to the outer egde, but it is unclear if this is purposeful or not and at what period this occured. There is a small tab visible on one of the folds but this may just be due to the folded condition of the object, however both this possible tab and the hole are features seen on some Early Bronze Age 'basket' ornaments, often interpreted as earrings or hair decorations. They are a…

A complete, Gold basket-shaped ornament of Bronze Age date (2500-2200 BC). The object is composed of a single, oval sheet of gold, folded on both sides to form a cylinder. There is an integral, flat, sub- rectangular tang which has then been folded under the object and projects at a right angle to the long axis. A Copper Age (Chalcolithic) gold 'basket ornament', possibly a hair ornament or ear ring, cut from thin gold sheet into an elongated oval shape extending into a narrow tang. The piece has been flattened out and is crinkled both horizontally and vertically. The oval plate is delineated by two concentric grooves following the edge, and two grooves running the length of the tang. The space within the oval plate is filled by four zones of grooves running perpendicular to the long edges and bounded by the inner concentric groove, giving four filled and three plain zones symmetrically place…

A fragment of gold strip tapering to a narrow, rounded end which is pierced, pushing excess gold through to the back. The long edges are flattened. The broken edge appears to be torn. The piece is slightly crumpled and distorted. Length 21.2mm; width 9.5mm; thickness 0.5mm at edge; weight 0.86 grams. Non-destructive X-ray flourescence analysis of the fragment indicated a surface composition in the range of 87-90% gold, 8-10% silver and less than 1% copper. The piece may be compared with complete examples of ornaments found at Binstead, Sussex (Treasure Annual Report 1998-1999, pp. 10-…

Gold basket-shaped ornament of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 BC - c. 2200 BC). Treasure case no. 2005 T113. Length 40mm, width 21.3mm, thickness of edges < 0.1mm, thickness at tang base c. 0.2mm. Weight 1.45g. Description: This oval plaque of thin sheet gold is actually slightly asymmetrical in bowing more along one of the longer sides. Description: A strip of very flimsy sheet gold describing an even crescentic shape, broadest in the middle and tapering gently to the ends. The terminals are expanded a little to form oval tabs, each with a central perforation, although one tab is broken across the perforation. This loss evidently occurred in antiquity, for there is a secondary perforation in the neck of the terminal. The edges of the crescent, including the tabs, are entirely outlined with closely set punched dots. The dots are about 0.9mm across, protrude beyond the surface by about 0.2mm and number 6-7 per centimet…
