The extant piece consists of a side knop which would have been attached to the headplate of the brooch.. It is dumbbell shaped in plan and plano-convex in section, with a flat reverse. The front face consists of two lobes joined by a constricted mid-setion. Each lobe is decorated with three incised transverse grooves. At the efge of one of the lobes is a shall median rectangular groove which would have facilitated attachment to the brooch. It is now covered with iron staining.
Half-round externally cast side knops are generally consistent with Martin's Group 2 cruciform brooches falling within the Phase B chronology dating to circa AD 475-550 (2015: 128).

At the apex is a transverse projecting collar set below a D-shaped suspension lug. The reverse is plain. The front face retains significant traces of gilding. It has a brown-green patina.
No precise parallel can be found on the database. The gilding would suggest a Medieval date although the patina could potentially suggest a Post Medieval date.

The lower element of the front face is decorated with a moulded raised chevron. The hook is now survived only by a short stump.
It is consistent with Read 2008: pg 104, no 403.
