A fragmentary Post Medieval ceramic sherd from a vessel base, probably a handled cup/mug (‘tyg’) or jar, of 17th century AD date. The fragment is black glazed red ‘Cistercian’ ware with a surviving height of 21.0mm and width of 33.7mm. A sharp fragment is adhered to the inside surface of the base indicating an explosion in the kiln or misfire likely damaged this vessel beyond repair. The fragment has a smooth black glaze with a reddish fabric and weighs 8.85g. A similar fragment can be seen Gloucester pottery fabric type series (potsherd.net)

Roughly triangular shaped stamped terra cotta tile fragment. The fabric is hard, moderately sandy with occasional larger grits, and has been evenly fired to a bright orange colour. There are also rare larger inclusions of small stones and possible mortar fragments. The current edges are not original; all are broken, irregular and rough. The rear (non-stamped) face is also very irregular and rough displaying what appears to be convolutions in the raw clay, with no evidence of a finished surface. This suggests that either the tile was not fully packed down into its mould when manufactur…
