White [i.e. colourless] translucent bubble glass with a greenish tint and slight iridescence mainly on one side, possibly window glass. A thin [1.7mm] flat form with one straight made edge which is slightly curled or lipped during its manufacture might suggest this to be from a small pane from a window. The good condition tends to argue against a medieval date as the 'forest glass' of that period usually deteriorates to a darkened crumbly friable texture whereas this is solid, probably a soda glass made to a Roman recipe. Whetstone, narrowed at the top, expanding gradually in one plane to form a bulbous terminal. Pierced for suspension at the top - drilled from both sides, minimum internal diameter 3.8mm. Concave wear at the edge of one side close to the piercing - width of wear up to 45mm. Fine grained Sandstone possible whetstone. Trapezoid straight-sided object of rectangular section, chipped at both ends and thickest at its wider end. The fine grained stone would lend itself to use as an improvised sharpener, and such mediocre honestones are most commonly reported from Roman contexts, though were also used before and after. Some doubt may be introduced by the tendency of some sedimentary stones to split neatly along bedding planes, as well as by other natural processes such as Aeolian sand-blasting, and by the lack of dishing from wear. A fragment of whetstone or hone of probable Roman date. The whetstone has been manufactured from very fine-grained, blue-grey mudstone, similar to the Jurassic rocks found on the coast of North Yorkshire. It is sub-rectagular in plan and section. It is broken down its length from being struck and shearing down a natural bedding plane. The damage, however, shows the very fine internal structure of the stone. An inscribed Roman stone stilus sharpener / whetstone. The stone is fine-grained green (slate?). The piece is 46.7mm long, 21.7mm wide and 8.2mm deep. There is a deep groove along the upper face where the stilus would be sharpened. The Latin inscription on the front face is: [M?]ΛNDΛCVS MATTΛVI which probably translates as 'Mandacus(?), son of Mattavus'. It is a possible Celtic / British name and patronym.

Fine-grained stone whetstone fragment; uncleaned, so material remains uncertain. One end of a rectangular section hone with all four sides dished by wear, in two opposed faces very heavily so. One proximal corner is rubbed or worn, broken across the other end. The improvised use of sharpening stones is especially typical of the Roman and Early Medieval periods; the former dating may be suggested here by accompanying finds. Lead probable weight. Cast waisted weight, resembling an exaggerated cotton reel form. This may have facilitated tied attachment, or movement along a guide or channel.
