2nd to 3rd century copper alloy Roman brooch. Hattatt describes this brooch as an oval brooch with intaglio, though the intaglio is missing from this example. The brooch is oval in plan and has a moulded, raised outer rim, 2mm wide, and a moulded raised inner oval rim, within which the missing intaglio would have been fixed. The surface of the brooch shows traces of silvering or tinning. There are no traces of enamel between the outer and inner, but it is likely that enamel was present originally. Bottom sherd of a colour-coated ware vessel dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410, probably the 2nd or 3rd century. Only the small pedestal foot of the vessel remains. The vessel (probably a small cup) was made from cream-coloured fabric and tempered with sand and small pieces of grit. It was then colour-coated with a patchy-looking reddish/black/orangey slip which is now cracked at the bottom and missing in places. This kind of decoration is typical for vessels produced in the Nene Valley.
