A medieval silver cut farthing of William I of Scotland (1165-1214) or posthumous, Short Cross and Stars phase B dating to c.AD1205-30 (Spink S5029), moneyer: Hue Walter, mint: uncertain. Ref: Spink 2020: p.14. The inscriptions are inevitably very partial but the obverse appear to read [  ]E W[  ], probably [  ]E WA[  ] which suggests it may be paralleled by a coin in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Bateman and Mayhew 1987 no.74) which reads hVE WALPO on both sides.   Length: 14.5 mm; Width: 9 mm; Weight: 0.47g

An incomplete lead plaque of probable Georgian/Victorian date c. AD 1700-1900. The piece is the form of arcading with a small cherub figure lounging over the top and holding onto a textile piece. The archading is decorated with foliate motif and is triple banded around the curved and longitudinal sides. There are two circule indenatations on the reverse, probably to fix it to another piece. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast great square headed brooch retaining the head plate and mid-bow; foot lost. A trapezoid head plate bears a rhomboid projection at either corner, with three zones of rouletted or stamped ornament between the rhomboids as an outer order. The rhomboid pprojections are coated in white metal. A square frame of two orders with possibly stamped texture confines a small central field of Salin Style 1 ornament, with a pellet or eye at its top right-hand corner. The head plate is abutted by a four-sided pyramidal mid-bow boss with projecting solid cylindrical l…

Copper alloy mount. Cast plate bearing the three-dimensional concavo-convex openwork inmage of a proto-heraldic lion walking left with tail above its body and four ball-shaped paws. Like NLM-AF619C this falls short of the proto-heraldic form of those buckle plates ascribed to the early 13th century, though this is less at variance with their character than that object. A rivet of diameter 1.9mm and length 4mm was set in each corner of the frame. Suggested date: Medieval, 1175-1225 Length: 24.4mm, Height: 22.5mm, Thickness/Height (i.e. projection, clear of rivets): 8.4mm, Weight: 7.21gms

Copper alloy buckle plate. Cast openwork buckle plate with the strongly three-dimensionally moulded openwork image of a maned lion walking left, hollowed behind. The mane and the sides of the mask are rendered with broad cuts and the hind limbs and tails are much more angular than is usual with the proto-heraldic examples of this form. A hand-cut zig-zag incised border frames the motif, which also has a drilled fixing hole at the lion’s rump. A slotted and folded tab projects at the outer end of the plate to clasp a buckle frame [lost]. The heavy moulding tends to suggest a Roman…

Copper alloy bracelet fragment. About half of a cast D-section beaded or segmented bracelet, with a thin billeted ring between each of thirteen bulbous mouldings along its surviving course. This appears related to the decoration of a torc, though this object would not fit readily round the neck of an adult. An Iron Age date would usually be apt, but the prominent presence of a slightly unusual [for this region] range of Early Medieval objects might permit its later use or reuse, especially when allied with the putative significance of the place names near the find spot, which attest an…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment.  Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The su…

Copper alloy buckle. A massy cast D-shaped buckle with an expanded and thickened textured outer edge with a broad grooved collar towards either end and a narrowed strap bar whose ends are grasped by biting beast heads; the centre of the strap bar is notched to receive a pin [lost].
