Unidentified object fragment. A small shard from a flat thin [1mm] plate which is broken on all sides and bears a figurative inscribed scene on one flat face. This depicts the head of a creature, perhaps a fish or serpent with a rather human-looking eye and expression, with flames or other issue from its elongated snout. This might represent some entirely different subject in this form, for example a constellation. A border interrupted by a triangular-topped feature appears below the image and indeterminate elements of the wider composition appear above. Suggested date: Late Medie…

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast rectangular section bar, curved so as to suggest a diameter of c.70mm had the original form been circular, now broken at one end and with a small hooked projection at the other, also with a rounded edge. Now lightly bent. The recurrent curves and form might hint at this being from a mechanism, as for a large clock, or from early agricultural machinery. The form might equally suggest a vessel handle though what remains would not be comfortable to hold or carry. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Length: 74.7mm, Width: 7.8mm, Th…

An incomplete copper alloy object of Roman or medieval date. The object is an incomplete shank of octagonal section. There section is essentially a square with a narrow facet at each corner. File marks are visible along all sides, and the object has a dark brown patina. One end is broken while the other terminates with two prongs. The prongs are curved and appear to be a modification of an object that once served a different purpose. The object seems too thick to be a needle or bodkin. The prongs are suggestive of a nail cleaner, but again the spacing between the prongs seems to wide f…

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast loop with opposed oval-ended lobes, of a crisp and probably die-stamped section overall, and with a rivet with expanded head and shank length 5.4mm passing through one of the lobes. Possibly distorted, possibly through mechanical failure. Staining on the side where the rivet head projects may indicate a thin lost element formerly set flush with this surface. Fragment of hollow cast copper alloy, possibly a miscast item of possible Bronze Age date. The object is rectangular in plan and appears to have been a hollow rectangle in section. Only one complete side and two incomplete sides survive. The object flares gently along its length, and also thickens to a triangular section at the widest end. The interior is covered with black soot and charcoal deposits much like is often seen on late medieval and post-medieval cooking pot legs. However, the exterior is smooth and has patches of mid brown patina as is commonly encountered on copper alloy …

Iron unidentified object fragment. A cast concavo-convex conical object, with an indication of a square feature, perhaps lost from this site, and with a conical hollow 23mm deepwithin. Chipped at top and bottom. The finder kindly notes this comes from an area of Roman finds. However, Dr Kevin Leahy considers almost all cast iron objects are likely to date to the later medieval or early post-medieval periods at the earliest. Lead alloy unidentified object. A fragment from a short cylindrical object of stepped construction with a bevelled edge at either end and with a wall thickness of 1.9mm. The overall diameter of the object when complete was probably 30mm or one pre-metric inch. The finished edges at either end suggest its complete extent is preserved by this fragment, while the grey tint of metal points to its relatively recent date. An internal deposit may hint at a connection to water supply. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1750-1950 Length: 28.9mm, Width (as found): 20.4mm, Thickness (…

The object is sub rectangular in plan and section.  Each of the long face of the object is decorated with a series of grooves or cut marks – each side is different.  On one face there is a line running the length of the object that suggests a fold, perhaps indicating how the object was original formed.  Neither end of the object is decorated. Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A small billet or partly melted copper alloy, flat on one side and probably convex on the other and perhaps originally straight sided. The flat side seems to have been lowermost when the object was exposed to the intense heat which has partly melted it.
