Flint borer of broad Mesolithic/Neolithic date (9000 - 2200 BC). The flint is a light brown coloured, semi-translucent, tertiary flake. It is sub-lozenge shaped in plan and sub-trapezoid in section. The borer point at the proximal end has been created by a combination of soft hammer low angle, semi-abrupt and abrupt retouch, which is invasive and scaled, carried out from both the dorsal and ventral faces. It is 22.2mm long x 13.4mm wide x 5.2mm thick and weighs 1.2g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint borer of unknown date, from the Mesolithic period to the Iron Age, 10,000 BC - 1 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of opaque light grey to cream flint. It is roughly D shaped in plan. The proximal end has been shaped into a point but there is retouch on all the sides. The retouch is not continuous but is short, sub-parallel and abrupt, becoming more scaled round the point. The flint is 24.6mm long, 15.3mm wide and 3.9mm thick. 1.78g.

A borer fabricated on a thermal flake of pale grey flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan and has circular ripples of percussion on one face with the opposing face covered in an off-white cortex. One edge of the flake, at the narrowest end, has been worked using short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch to narrow the flake even further and produce a sharp point. This has been further enhanced by the removal of two small spalls struck downwards from the tip. The retouch along the edge also serves to create a scraping edge making this a dual-purpose tool perhaps. It is probably Neolithic i…

A borer or piercer fabricated on a thermal flake of honey-coloured flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan. One face is free of cortex and may have the scars of previous flake removal. The opposing face is predominantly covered in an off-white cortex. The narrowest part of the flake has been worked into a point using short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch along the curved, inner edge. The tip of the point has had two spalls removed at approximately 45 degrees to the vertical plane to produce a chisel-like point with two facets.

A borer or piercer fabricated on a pebble of dark brown flint. The flint pebble has been subject to a single strike to thin one end of it. There is no bulb of percussion evident but percussion ripples can be seen on the exposed face. The rest of the flint pebble is covered in a thick, off- white cortex The pebble has been finely and steeply pressure-flaked at the thinned end on two sides to produce a narrow point suitable for boring or piercing. The tip of the point has been broken off and lost. This object is probably of Mesolithic date.

A borer or piercer fabricated on a secondary flake of honey-coloured flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan with both ventral and dorsal faces displaying ripples of percussion in the same direction. No bulb of percussion is evident as this has been lost due to further rework. The narrowest part of the flake is at the proximal end and has been worked into a point using short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch along its edges. The tip of the point has had two spalls removed at approximately 45 degrees to the vertical plane to produce a chisel-like point with two facets. A borer or piercer fabricated on a thick, secondary flake of honey-coloured flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan with no ripples of percussion or bulb of percussion evident on either face. There is a large area of off-white cortex remaining on one face covering approximately 80% of its surface. The flake has one, thick, convex edge, with the opposing one being worked to produce a sharp, concave edge using long, sub-parallel, low-angle retouch along its length. The tip of the borer has been further worked to produce a sharp point for boring or piercing using short, scaled, semi-a…

A flint borer or piercer fabricated on a thick tertiary flake of dark grey flint. There are the remains of a flat striking platform at the proximal end and a large bulb of percussion and ripples of percussion across the ventral face. The dorsal face has the scars of two previous flake removals, one ending in a large hinge fracture. The thickening of the flake at the point of this hinge fracture has been utilised to create a boring or piercing point at the distal end using short, scaled, abrupt retouch along one edge and around the tip of the point. There is no other working on the fla…

A flint borer or piercer fabricated on a primary flake from a nodule of grey/brown flint. There is no bulb of percussion and no ripples of percussion evident on the ventral face but there are two patches of chalky off-white cortex. The dorsal face is completely covered in the same chalky cortex. One edge of the flake has been thinned using long, parallel, shallow retouch. At one end of this thinned area, a deep notch has been worked using short, scaled, abrupt retouch, creating a point on one 'corner' of the flake. This point has been further worked using short, scaled, abrupt retouch…

A Neolithic/Bronze Age flint borer made from dark brown flint.
The flint is roughly rectangular with a pointed corner section. Ripples travel away from the point of the piece. Two sections of the ventral surface are loose and can lose some flakes if forced. The ventral surface is almost flat with a short, scaled and semi-abrupt retouch.
The distal surface is covered in cortex and slightly bulges outwards.

A borer or piercer fabricated on a natural flake of light brown, mottled flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan. One face is free of cortex whilst the opposing face retains a small area of light brown cortex. The flake has been extensively, but crudely worked using long, scaled, abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch. A point has been created and finished by removing two spalls from the tip downwards. This crude type of tool, utilising a natural flake, is typical of flint working during later Prehistory.

Dark grey flint with cortex, cloudy white patina on struck surfaces, possible awl or borer. Flake with long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a small bulb at one end of the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect may define a triangular point at one end. The extent of patina may suggest a period of post-depositional weathering. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.

Grey semi-translucent flint of good quality borer. Flake with a broad flake stuck from its dorsal surface and a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one indented edge, defining a small point - though it is uncertain whether this has been narrowed by subsequent damage. The lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Grey flint with cortex and slight misty patina, borer. Sub-triangular flake with cortex trimmed but not removed from the diorsal side and with ripples on the ventral. Dark grey flint with dense milky patina, borer. Irregular flake with broad flakes struck from both sides, and with very short abrupt retouch executed from one side to define a point. The retouch interrupts patina accumulated over the previously struck surfaces, which may suggest the reuse of a fragment of conveniently [for handling in its reworked state] hollowed debitage which had endured prolonged exposure. Both episodes may be of Neolithic date. A larger spall represents more recent adventitious damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.
