Buff coloured flint point, possibly early neolithic. Pale grey flint with cortex possible knife fragment. A large flake with an apparently curved cutting edge, neatly truncated on one end where a flat and possibly smoothed surface of lentoid form appears. A large flake has been removed from behind the putative cutting edge by hard hammer strike from the dorsal aspect, possibly affording a thumb rest. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect appears to follow the curving edge, its progress marked by the removal of a pale patinated surface to reveal the pale grey flint below – though a similar colour change also appears …

A flint scraper of uncertain date, probably Mesolithic to Neolithic, 9000 - 2200 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of rich brown flint. The distal end has short scaled, semi-abrupt retouch, and the proximal end has similar retouch, but more invasive, and from both faces. The flint is 36.7mm long, 28.4mm wide, 5.2mm thick and weighs 6.07g.

It is made on a secondary flake with a small area of pale brown cortex at the distal end. The dorsal side bears the scars of the removal of two earlier longitudinal flakes. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch but there are conchoidal ripples along the full length of the ventral face. There is invasive, scaled semi-abrupt flake removal scar…

A Neolithic Greenstone axe presumed to be of Group VI (6), a product of the Langdale Pike axe factory. This example is an edge-polished flint axe, limited polishing it typical of the late Neolithic. It is covered in scaled and low angle flaking. The axe is pointed oval in cross-section and is broadly sub-rectangular, with a rounded polished cutting edge and a tapered, abraded and rounded butt. The Langdale greenstone axes were traded from a quarry on Langdale Pike, Cumbria, and their distribution around the Humber estuary is denser than anywhere except around the p…

Dark grey flint with re-formed cortex, core. A pyramidal core with long narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad flat platform. The working was not carried all round the object. A dense milky patina has extended across all struck surfaces and may argue a subsequent long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Where this appears on the Wolds it is a local environmental effect and is very common. However, such patination is rare in the assemblage presented from Scotter, so this object may have been imported, perhaps in gravel or with chalk used to mar…

Pale brown  semi-translucent flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, possible backed blade. A small thin flake with a single long flake trimmed from its dorsal side and a slightly concave ventral surface which is faintly rippled; bulb lost to a recent chip. Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. Probably part of a pyramidal core, with narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform; one or two sides appear to have parted from the object during this activity. The penultimate episode seems to have been the removal of another thin narrow flake from the left [as illustrated] side of the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patination might suggest this object to have then been incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex spot, fabricator. A finger-shaped flake with covering multangular scalar hard hammer retouch across all surfaces, producing a ragged rhomboid or lentoid section. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment while orange spots may hint at rolling in gravel. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 59mm, Width: 24mm, Thickness: 14.1mm, Weight: 18.77gms

Pale grey-buff flint, appearing brown under transmitted light, with re-forming cortex, probable debitage. Small flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Cortex has begun to re-form over struck areas on the dorsal side. A lack of subsequent patina might suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context. Chipped at either end. Flint with cortex spot serrated implement. Flake with long broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface with a bulb at one end. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest edge, leaving about 6 notches per centimetre. Dense white patina suggests the flake has subsequently endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object has subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Dark brown flint with re-formed cortex, probable backed blade. A small flake with  a flat dorsal surface bearing re-forming buff cortex and a prominent bulb on the ventral side. The bulb has been trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, to give a flat surface against which pressure might be brought to bear. The cutting edge was formed by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following convergent long edges.
