A small flint core probably of Mesolithic date to Early Neolithic date (c. 8000 - 3300 BC).
The object is made from a dark-grey/dark-brown translucent flint. The surface of the flint is very clear and is not covered by any white patina associated with recortication. However, there is an area of cortex remaining on the flint.
The object has a sub-conical shape. It is most likely an example of a conical bladelet core. There is a single striking platform, which serves as the flat base of the cone-like object. There is also a single flaking surface that wraps around the re…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with re-formed cortex, core. A pyramidal core with long narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad flat platform. The working was not carried all round the object. A dense milky patina has extended across all struck surfaces and may argue a subsequent long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Where this appears on the Wolds it is a local environmental effect and is very common. However, such patination is rare in the assemblage presented from Scotter, so this object may have been imported, perhaps in gravel or with chalk used to mar…

Opaque pale grey flint possible core fragment. A thin sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow long flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform. Both the long edges may be serrated, though this is more easily felt than observed; along one long side the putative serration may be accompanied by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. The ventral surface is flat. If not a core, this might alternatively be a plano-convex knife, perhaps unfinished. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic, 7000-3500 BC

Mottled grey and brown flint core. A small chunk which bears multiple scars from multangular hard hammer working. There is more than one episode represented, as one struck facet had accumulated a light patina before it was partially removed by later working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. Probably part of a pyramidal core, with narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform; one or two sides appear to have parted from the object during this activity. The penultimate episode seems to have been the removal of another thin narrow flake from the left [as illustrated] side of the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patination might suggest this object to have then been incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Pale grey flint with cortex, core. A thick flake with broad flakes removed three quarters of the way around, with some but not all removals working from a broad flat oval striking platform. Rust spotting may arise from incorporation into gravels. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint core. A broad chunk with long parallel flakes removed by unilateral working from a broad striking platform, probably chipped in antiquity on the opposite side. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. A sub-triangular chunk with long broad parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat striking platform. The core has broken diagonally, though scars on what remains of its back may suggest that working was carried most of the way round. The lack of patination may hint that the object was subsequently incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Dark grey flint with cortex, core fragment. A chunk struck from a nodule leaving a broad striking platform and a subsequently broken bulb. Zones of probably unidirectional working have trimmed long narrow parallel flakes, probably from a flat striking platform. The ventral surface is jaggedly broken. Almost all struck surfaces were subsequently coated in misty [dorsal side] or dense creamy [ventral side] patina, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. A single draft or chip may represent later trimming of the patina from the dorsal side, but might equally be adven…

Grey brown flint with cortex, core. A small chunk bearing broad and narrow scars from multangular working; as traces of patina remain between struck faces this may have entailed reuse of a discarded core. The lack of subsequent patination may hint that the object was subsequently incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. Chunk with broad parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working; the face of a core appears to have spalled away from the rest, including the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patination may hint that the fragment was incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey-brown flint with re-forming cortex in one zone only, possibly collected from the East Coast, core.
