A Neolithic Greenstone axe presumed to be of Group VI (6), a product of the Langdale Pike axe factory. This example is an edge-polished flint axe, limited polishing it typical of the late Neolithic. It is covered in scaled and low angle flaking. The axe is pointed oval in cross-section and is broadly sub-rectangular, with a rounded polished cutting edge and a tapered, abraded and rounded butt. The Langdale greenstone axes were traded from a quarry on Langdale Pike, Cumbria, and their distribution around the Humber estuary is denser than anywhere except around the p…

Blade-like flake. Secondary flake. Flat striking platform at the proximal end and a raised bulb of percussion with bulbar scar; it has weak conchoidal ripple marks on the ventral face indicating it has been struck by a soft hammer. The dorsal face has surviving cortex covering c.60% of the surface. There is evidence of retouch on the dorsal face edge with short, stepped, low angle retouch. Slight positive hing fracture at the top, rather thana rounded end/feathered out terminal. Length:45.09 mm; Width: 27.57 mm; Thickness:7.41 mm; Weight: 11.15g Soft hammer is rare after th…

A greyish flint flake, probably a scraper Neolithic to early Bronze age. Ellipsoid shape with a broken distal end. The ventral surface is mostly smooth and fairly flat, and has a clear striking point and small bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface slopes up from the the edges and flattening at the top forming a narrow 'plateau, running from proximal to distal end. Partial retouch visible. Length 31mm, width 17.4mm, thickness 4.7mm, weight 3.0g.

A flint scraper possibly dating to the Neolithic period, c.4000-2,500 BC. Secondary flake. Dark grey with a translucent outer perimeter. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present with faint conchoidal ripples probably indicating a soft hammer trauma. Traces of retouch along the distal end which is invasive, scaled and semi-abrupt. The dorsal side is covered in convex with areas of invasive retouch. The soft hammer ripples probably indicate an early Neolithic date. Length: 37.34 mm; Width: 27.64; Thickness: 10.39 mm; Weight: 13.60g

Flint scraper, probably of Neolithic date, dating from about 4000 BC - 2200 BC. It is sub-triangular in shape and concavo-convex is cross section, it curves and tapers to a narrow rounded distal end. The ventral surface is concave with a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end with slight ripples. The dorsal side has flake scars and either long side have fine, short, abrupt, parallel retouch. The distal end has been knapped into a point with retouch on both the ventral and dorsal sides. The lithic retains a minor amount of cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. It…

A complete knapped flint scraper dating to the later Neolithic or Bronze Age (c. 3000 BC - 1150 BC). The object is broadly oval shaped, with a flattened butt and rounded working edge. Struck from a core of mottled dark to medium grey flint, a tertiary flake with none of the cortex being retained. The platform is sub-triangular in plan and secondary modification in the form of directly applied scaled retouch is visible at the distal end. Preserved in fresh condition and largely unpatinated. The overall dimensions are as follows: 41.6mm in length, 28.84mm in width, 11.95mm in thickne…

A late Neolithic or early Bronze Age flint end scraper or knife. Only approximately half of the tool survives. The surviving part is the proximal end, and contains a striking platform. A bulb of percussion is visible on the ventral surface. The dorsal surface has a a large flake-removal scar running down the centre, with several narrower others flanking it on both sides. No retouch is visible; this, presumably, was on the end that is now missing. The flint appears to have snapped almost horizontally across the flint. The flint is mottled brown.

A Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint scraper, dating to c. 4000-1600 BC. The scraper has been struck from a secondary flake, as it retains c. <5% cortex of its entire surface area. The dorsal surface has one large negative flake scar from previous flake removal, and the ventral surface exhibits a striking platform and bulb of percussion at its proximal end. The dorsal face exhibits short, scaled, abrupt retouch along c. 70% of its edge. It is very dark brown in colour and translucent towards the edges.
