An incomplete copper alloy object of Roman or medieval date. The object is an incomplete shank of octagonal section. There section is essentially a square with a narrow facet at each corner. File marks are visible along all sides, and the object has a dark brown patina. One end is broken while the other terminates with two prongs. Fragment of hollow cast copper alloy, possibly a miscast item of possible Bronze Age date. The object is rectangular in plan and appears to have been a hollow rectangle in section. Only one complete side and two incomplete sides survive. The object flares gently along its length, and also thickens to a triangular section at the widest end. The interior is covered with black soot and charcoal deposits much like is often seen on late medieval and post-medieval cooking pot legs. It is partially broken and missing 50% of one side. Copper alloy stud or furniture fitting. The head is dome shaped 17mm in diameter and approximately 10.22mm in depth. The stem is circular, approx.12.51mm in length, narrowing at the end possibly into a now broken off screw. The dome is heavily decorated with a pattern of gilded grooves leading from the centre to the edge forming triangles which are alternately red and those with circular indentations.
