A cast copper alloy openwork strap fitting of post medieval date (c. AD 1600 - 1700). The overall shape is piriform, the main plate is an openwork foliate head, the beard of which forms a bottom knop. A smaller upper knop has the moulded features of a grinning face. The reverse is flat and has two attachment spikes, one broken and both bent over. The spikes appear to be soldered onto the plate rather than integrally cast. The whole object has a dust green patina. The style is reminiscent of pieces described discussed by Brian Read (2001: 28) fig. 20, no. 291, who su…

An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked strap fitting, possibly of post medieval (16th century) date.
The object has a triangular head plate. The edges are uneven, most likely from wear and damage rather than decorative effect. The wide edge, ie, opposite the hook, has a notched break. The point of the hook is missing. There are two holes, 1.2 mm diameter, presumably for rivets or other means of attachment, arranged along the long axis of the plate, 17.5 mm from the hook. The plate has a slight dihedral, bending from the long axis.
The overall form of the object resembles Read's …

An incomplete cast copper alloy object, possibly a strap fitting, probably of post-medieval date (c AD 1500 - 1700)
The object is broadly triangular in shape, tapering from 9.9 mm wide to 3.1 mm, and from 5 mm thick to 3 mm.
It is corroded and abraded but seems to be formed as four rounded beads or segments with waists between, diminishing in size to form the overall triangular wedge shape. The widest of these segments appears to terminate in a break and has an oval patch of corrosion product 2.9 mm diameter. The rear surface is flat, the segments are hollowed. The second and fo…

A copper alloy, medieval folding strap clasp. The mount has folded over and fused onto the plate, and although slightly pitted, a single circular decorative motif is visible. The plate would appear to be complete, with a copper alloy rivet holding the extant fabric in place, between two sheets of metal. Two incised lines run along the edge of the frame, which has on this side a square pattern, quartered, towards the hindge. 28.9 length, 13.2 mm width, 6.9 thickness. 4.98 g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy possible strap fitting, probably of the late-Roman or Early Medieval period, dating from c. AD 200 - c. AD 1100.
It is an openwork tube or cage comprising three D-shaped hoops rising from a flat, scallop-edged base and joined by a longditudinal bar along the top. There seems to be an old break at one end of the base, at the other is a tab which is bent upwards; it is difficult to determine if this is accidental damage or deliberate, to retain whatever object, if any, was inserted into the 'tube'. Looking straight down the 'tube' from the broken end i…

A copper alloy post-medieval belt clasp (AD c.1750-c.1850). Overall, the object measures 40.6mm long, 20.7mm wide and 6.7mm thick. It weighs 14.92g. The clasp is S-shaped with zoomorphic terminals in the shape of dragons', dogs' or snakes' heads. Each head has moulded details depicting ears, eyes and snout. Other decoration along the animals' necks towards the centre of the object is too worn to distinguish apart from a pair of circumferential ridges at the join.

The outer curved edge of the larger loop is decorated with a zoomorphic moulding in the shape of a wolf or dog's head. The other parts of the frame and strap bar are rectangular in cross-section.

Complete copper-alloy openwork figurative strap fitting or mount of post Medieval date, c.1600-1700, possibly part of a sword belt. The mount is flat and is essentially circular in outline with a smaller sub-circular pierced lobe projecting from one side of this circle, either as an additional point of attachment or as a suspension point for other fittings. The design of the mount is of a crescent moon with the tips of the moon meeting with an irregularly shaped star, possibly of seven-points, to close the circle. Post Medieval Strap Fitting: Fragment of a cast copper alloy S-shaped belt fastener. Only one of the terminals has survived and is moulded into the shape of a zoomorphic head, probably intended to be a swan or possibly a snake.
Belt Fasteners of this type are thought to originally have had a military connection and had two main periods of fashion in the 1600s and later in the 1700s.
This fitting has been dated c.1600-1800.
